Where in Sacramento to get steel for welding projects?

Somewhat stupid question. Where to get misc steel for my welding projects? The few places I have been are set up for large contractor type business. Are any open on Saturdays?

Home improvement stores have some steel shapes, but seem over-priced.

Stuff I am planning to make: rocker panel protection, various brackets, swing-out bumper with rack, etc

Blue collor supply is great, but you generally have to buy 20 ft. lengths of steel stock, unless they happen to have what you need already cut. If you need smaller lengths, go to C&C off sunrise. They will cut any length of what they stock.

Blue Collar has lots of tid-bit scraps for cheap if your putting something together, they also can cut you the steel.

S&K Steel is right by Blue Collar and probably has anything you need...

That sais i`ve gotten steel from both places...

Thanks, I have been to Blue Collar for nuts and bolts. They do have scraps and such as well as stainless and aluminum. Last week they did not have any 1x2 or 2x2 box. I will check S&K.

Where is Blue Collar Supply?

I have dealt with several places.
Del Paso Steel on Raley Blvd is right by my shop and one of the guys there has a built CJ7 parked out front.

Alling Iron on Duluth in West Sac because they are a couple blocks away from work.

20 feet never lasts long enough once you get going.

BCS has 5' of the popular stuff and they cut to order on all of there 20' stuff. They also have a 10' shear for sheet goods.

what about Pipe Caps?

What about a source for pipe caps in the sac area, to be used as diff-armour. I called around and could not find anything, but I'm not sure I was asking for the right part, I asked for a 10" weld on pipe cap. This would be for the dif on a land cruiser.

Old Scout: <smacks forehead> Been there a few times and did not realize they had more stock out back! They are open Saturdays, except as I found out today they are closed for the holiday weekend

Robert: I will check out Del Paso Steel and Alling, I live in Natomas so they are closer.

Since my jeep is the only vehicle for transporting, 20' sticks are a little to hairy to carry. 12' is about the max

Del Paso does cuts for $1 per cut. I get 10' lengths that fit well inside the Jeep.

Blue Coller Supply is O.K. but they are expencive, good thing is they are open on saterdays.

The best place for just about any type of steel, and the best priced is S and K Steel. Its just down the street from Blue coller Supply. You have to know what you want, you cant just walk around and look at different material, but you can get it in any length you want.

I still want to know where BCS is at.

Ya I know I could look it up in the phone book, but that would mean getting up and doing something.

Allright, I am going to get steel today on my way home. I am going to S&K or BCS. I don't think I have time for both. Which one has the following?

To get started I need

2x4x.188 box - 10'
2x2x.125 box - 10'
2x.188 bar - 5'
1.5x1.5x.125 angle - 10'

Where to get tubing to make a hinge? I only need 10" of 2" heavy wall tubing and some solid stuff for the inner part. I have got tubing for my antiwrap bar from a tubing supplier in west sac but they charged me $40 for 7' for 1.75" cold rolled heavy wall and they were not set up for walk in customers.

S&K has many short cuts, end cuts Etc. Go into the office and tell them that you want to look at the remnants. Most are under 8’. They also have 20’ lengths of tubing, angle, flat stock, and rod. If they do not have it in stock, they will order it. Blue Collar will cut your stock for you but you still have to buy the 20’ length. They also have some misc. short cuts and plate. Del Paso Steel does not have short cuts but can get you anything you want also. I buy 1 ½” hew tube from them all the time for $22. a 20’ stick.

Thanks, I made it to both. S&K is cool, lots of shapes and will cut to order. Blue Collar has some remnant plate stock and 5' sticks of the more popular shapes.

What I have not found yet is swing out tire carrier hinge material. I may just get the hinge from http://www.troutindustries.com/ and be done with it.
