I'm looking for the inside measurment of a 3" wide square tube. It has 3/16" walls. What I don't know is - is the standard way to measure it 3" inside, or 3" outside? I can go from there.

I assume it is an outside measurment of 3". that would mean that the inside is 2 5/8". Looks like I answered it myself, but I'm still uncertain of the way it's measured.

All tubing is measured on an outside dimension, But on the other hand, pipe is measured on the inside dimension..

Tube is always the outside dimension, pipe is actually the nominal diameter, or what the ID should be, but pipe isnt drawn to tight tolerances. For example,

1" pip-OD 1.315, ID 1.049
1 1/2" pipe, OD is 1.9", ID is 1. 610
2"pipe-OD2.375, ID 2.067

Thats for sch40 standard weight pipe.
