i put in new cats a few moths ago and i had some carb work done...the shop put my wires on wrong and it ran kinda funny,i pulled into th gas station and heard a sizzing sound and when i looked under,my cats were red hot...would this cause them to not do there job? would they give me any signs of being fawked in anyway? the flow feels fine...im asking this because im not passing smog and i was positive they would have helped me....im hopeing the heat didnt mely anything in there....

hey hey....well yeh it heated up the outer shell but im asking about te catylac conv itself...its wrapped in aluminum so im assumin that wouldnt be too hard to heat up....anyone?

A friend of mine had a bad o2 sensor in his 91 yj that allowed it to run waayyyyy too rich and the heat killed the cat, it melted the insides, but it ran like shit after that and it sounds like yours is ok. just my .02.

Yup, thats what usually kills them. Maybe lean that thing out a little- running ritch is what killed my brand new cat after a month.

running rich give cooler EGT's unless that extra fuel is actually burning in teh cat then running rich wont hurt it much...

lean mixtures give extrmemly high EGT's and has been know to turn a set of headers bright orange and nearly white... and in fawking glowing!

butif your cats were red , yep they are probably fuct.

I agree with this, If they where that hot on the outside, my bet is it burned the coating off the comb, make the shop replace them!

if the cat glows it still works. cats don't burn out with heat they burn out when the vehicle runs like shit. crossed plug wires would kill it but depends on how long it ran like that. and runing rich is what would kill it and rock hitting it and speed bumps are the main problem. pm me the numbers it was failing on and all the details and i'll help u out. by the way i own a smog shop in sacramento.
