You can't just run your 3rd member upside down on a 9inch. You can go to http://www.currieenterprises.com/ They make high pinion 3rd members but use the 8.8 inch ring gear.

you can run the 3rd upside down, with some modifying
exactly what modifying would one have to do? i have a 9 inch and have thought about the exact same thing. i have also thought about making a custom front housing and using the third out of the rear--only upside down. i wonder if that would work?

Maybe one of those guys will chime in and shed some light on the situation.

You sure can run your third upside down, you just need to have some way to oil the pinion and ring gear weather it be external oiler or some other way. A lot of the mog9 manufacturers keep that secret, but check wngrog's pinion support with the oil passages.
...But thats not going to be your problem. Your problem will be the fact that you will be driving in reverse.

Exactly, and nobody makes reverse cut 9" gears. Thats why currie uses an 8.8 gear. And a totally custom centersection to house everything.

With a rear mounted engine, or portals, you can run your axle upside down with normal cut gears. Oiling is a issue though, well covered by wrngogs buildup

Personally time and BS don't equal doing this job yourself. Due to the oiling problems of the highpinion 9" its very likely you may have a problem someday. Thats why you want a warranty or the job done right. Just my .02
