oil pan drop in a TJ
Hi.
I'm looking for a decent writeup on dropping the oil pan and changing the oil pump out in a '97 TJ SE. I went to do it last weekend, but I saw the exhaust being in the way, that I would have to remove the pan and probably destroy the rear main seal, etc... so I said, "not now" I need some good instructions on this job. Can anyone assist? I did do a search but I didn't find anything I was looking for (searched on "oil pan" and "rear main seal"). Thanks for the help!

It's not a big deal at all. the exhaust makes it tight but the pan will slide out. to make it a little easier unbolt where the headers bolt up to the exhaust, it'll give you a bit more slack to work w/.

If the exhaust is in the way I'm assuming you've got the 6 cyl. I helped a buddy replace his oil pan a few weeks ago (The drain plug had found it's way into a rock
). We unbolted the exhaust from the manifold and had to drop the T-case skid plate in order to get the pan out. It wasn't too bad except that 3 of the 4 exhaust bolts snapped off when we were torqing them off. I'd suggest having 4 new ones ready to go before you start. You'll also need some new pan gaskets. I suppose you could use Permatex, but it might be kind of a pain.
