A Four Runner or XJ would be my choices. The Runner being my first choice since everyone and their dog seems to have an XJ. The runner would take less work to make it truly capable off road in my opinion.

Why I bought a Land Rover Disco :
Wanted a solid axle rig ( IFS/IRS sux ass ) Wanted a full boxed frame (Unibody suxs) Wanted an all gear transfer case ( chains sux) Wanted a mid size rig. 108" wheelbase max! Wanted a V8 Wanted 4 door. No other SUV could meet my wants and I got a Full Float rear axle and a nice low range (3.25:1) as part of the deal.

easy there old timer, just ribbin ya. sure id like to have a D90, but im a poor college student, the site you had said $7000 and also you have to look hard for a deal, he's 16 and needs wheels. can your disco fit 31"s stock? my 4runner is bone stock. trying to raise funds for it, i bought it for $1900 and it 4wheels fine for $1900
could you have bought a disco when you were 16? or sould i say 1930 Rover 10/25' ? is that more appropriate?

Scout you quoted prices for a bunch of everyday stuff you can prolly get a Scmucks or some other cheap ass parts store. What about other parts? Like stuff you have to go to the dealer for? What happens when you have to rebuld the engine? Or rebuild an auto? I'm guessing big $$$ in this deptartment. But I dunno. That's why I ask. I gotta admit. Rotors are cheaper than I thought they'd be.

You can get a few parts at local Scmucks,Vato Zone, Napa, Car Quest , but not many. Dig around HERE if you want to see more parts costs.

I know you said you don't like first generation 4-runners but one of those would be my pick. I like the removable top. The 2nd gen. runners are nice too.
Toy buffs: Didn't the first year or two have a solid diff up front? If memory serves, 86 was the first year for IFS, correct? What was the first year the the runner? 84', 85', 86'?

well they started mid 84, but thats irelavant, he wants 4 doors. I say get the newest good one you can afford. the old 3.0 v6 isnt nessesary or impressive, so dont bust your balls looking for it. your probably gonna get a chain driven t-case. i say save your money and dont bother getting an ifs lift. rogerbrown might have a body lift for ya. get a rear insertable locker, and some mud tires and go.

4Runner is the quickest and easiest to get offroadable as far as I'm concerned. The only drawback is the IFS but that can be dealt with. The Cherokee is a unibody and needs alot of support to keep it from bending the body up while the 4Runner is a full-frame vehicle. Now if you are going to fix it up sas conversion is the way to go if you want a hardcore rig, but if you are not that far into it yet the IFS will work just fine for you. If you get a v6 make it an auto trans since it will be instantly fun if you lock the axles. If you want a 4banger make it a stick since you'll need a secondary t-case to accomidate for the gearing. The v6 yota rear axle is just as strong as a dana 44 and will serve you well and as long as you are not a throttle jockey the IFS will survive in the front until you can do the conversion.
