Difficulty Rating to replace Lights\Turn Signal Assembly
So I have 2 questions, however they may very well be the same problem.
Specs: 1996 Land Rover Disco Pretty much all stock Background: 6 Months ago brights stopped working, when lights are switched (regular-to-bright) the lights completely go out (possibly short?), kind of intermitent (works about 5% of the time). 1 month ago rotating switch (to turn lights on) started feeling 'crunchy' (like broken plastic). 1 week ago rotating switch stopped functioning correctly. Running and dash lights turn on but go out completely if the switch is turned to turn on the main headlights. 1st Question: has anyone had a similar problem with the Brights not working but regular headlights are fine (my guess is that it's, and always has been, the assembly) 2nd Question: How hard is it to replace the Turn Signal\Lights assembly, I found it new for $200; however I do not have a shop or technical manual. The manual is definetly on my list of must haves, there's just never enough $$ though. |

1996!!! Usually by this age the Lucas electrics have failed completely. Count youself lucky and buy night vision goggles before the rest of the lighting system fails. Failure of the complete lighting system can only be repaired by replacing the vehicle, so all of us CB's on this board just use night vision goggles to drive at night. If you are crazy enough to attempt the repair youself don't forget to replace the blinker fluid.

I second the blinker fluid, it took me 3 days to finally get my lights hooked up, and they still didn't work. I had to take them all out again and add 2 quarts each of 90W blinker fluid and BAM they worked like a charm.

I'd suggest a phone call to the Land Rover dealer/service desk. They will prolly tell you bring it in, but who knows, you might catch someone in a good mood. But I bet it is only a couple of screws and some tabs; prolly quite easy. If you don't want to get a shop manual, peruse the local autoparts store and 'library' it there. But be cool and buy something anyway, even if it's small. Also, another source for shop manuals is in your local library Good luck, and don't mind the bashing

try buying a new "flasher". they're like $2 at most mechanic shops, i had a problem were my turn signals didn't work and my high-wipers quit working. The new flasher fixed both problems. I don't know if that will fix the high-headlights but its worth a shot at to see if that will fix it, instead of paying $200 for a whole new assembly.
