I know that in most applications a 1.5" ram is suggested, but I have a few reasons to be considering one a bit smaller. Since I'm only running 35s, and the steering is already pretty good, I'm thinking that I wouldn't even need the strength of a 1.5" ram.
The one I'm looking at is much cheaper than any 1.5" rams I've found, it's 1 1/8" and has about 2/3 of the force rating as an equivalent 1.5" ram.
So, has anyone run a ram with a bore smaller than 1.5"? What was your experience? Was the difference still very noticeable?
This is a Jeep MJ Comanche with a Waggy D44 front, 35" MTRs and the stock pump.
I've been planning hydro assist for a while. the 1.5" ram is going to be your best bet to keep the stock turning match between the ram and the box(a 2" ram will have more volume than a 1.5" causing the ram to push/pull slower than the box turns the draglink, on the same line, a smaller ram will make the push/pull faster than the box). another point is if you go with a smaller ram, that means a smaller rod diameter(= bent rod). Go with the 1.5" ram. You'll thank yourself when you go with larger tires.
actually, both I was looking at use a 3/4" rod, and my tie-rod will be BEEFY, so I'm not concerned with that.
I recall AshmanXJ, who has the same pump and box, say that his 1.5" ram still slows his steering down a little, so even smaller would be the perfect balance.
also, guys are reporting great results with 40"+ swampers using a 1.5" ram, I will be sticking to 35" tires (anything bigger and wheelin gets too easy ) and figure that even a cylinder with 2/3 the force of a 1.5" should be plenty for me.
yeah, it was the rod on the ram that worried me, not the tierod. a 3/4" rod seems to be relatively strong on the 1.5" rams as long as there isn't significant binding on rocks and you're not required to force it. I only heard of the 1.5" ram slowing down the steering on the push side(more volume to push). at $40, give it a try and let us know how it is
