Shift down manually...just don't over-rev it by shifting down at too high of a speed. My three speed Auto on my 460 ford powered motorhome is safe to downshift at about 48 MPH...
Dunno what you've got but run it up in 2nd gear to the highest speed you'd be comfortable running it in, then you'll know what speed you'll be safe to manually downshift at.

Some automatics are smart enough to know not to downshift yet. Like if you were to go from 55 in D and throw it into L the tranny won't just downshift into L until it get's slow enough to. However it will downshift at the highest speed feasible causing unexpected sudden wheel slowage (seatbelts are fun).

Not that I know anything, this is just what i've experienced mucking around with things.

Some, but not all. And since this guy didn't tell us what he has, we can't help him. Not that it matters though, if you are smart enough to throw your tranny into first at 55 then you deserve whatever happens...

Doh, I thought that was how you were suppose to go down a hill using low gear... brakes will stop your wheels but your momentum keeps your rig skidding down the hill out o control I admit this is sometimes fun but controled decent does have its upsides
