Diesel jeep
I was wheelin last weekend and I went up a steep hill and my jeep started to blow out black smoke like a diesel, but I don’t have a diesel. Is this good? I have a Chrysler 304 gas. Also when I would try to go up really steep hills my jeep would get half way up the hill and die. Could it be the carb or something wrong with the ignition timing? When I would try to restart the jeep it would act like it was flooded, so I had to sit there for a min and it would start. |

1. YOU DO NOT HAVE A FUCKING CRYSLER 304. Jeep never used a chrysler 304, cause crysler never made one, it was made in house by AMC. also the AMC 360 is not in any way shape or form close to a Mopus 360- either.
AMC motors are AMC not mopar not Ford, Chevy, or any thing else. If you own a jeep you need to understand this. The only outcasts were the Buick Valiant V-6 and the Iron Duke 151, which was done under the watchful eye of Kaiser. AMC took over jeep in the early 70's 70/71 from there through to the days of the Wrangler, Jeep used AMC motors AMC 304 v-8 in your case. 2. Blue smoke and Black smoke Blue smoke = Rings and valve guides Black Carburation and possibly ignition. since it did it on a hill id lean towards flooding out and over fueling, there in probably lies your problem get your Carb fixed.

The closest AMC and Chrysler got in another brand (afaik) would be late production (73-75, iirc) 2wd International pickups with an AMC-sourced 401 V8 and a Chrysler TF727 automatic tranny...from the factory. Talk about odd. But enough bashing on you, this is the Noob forum anyway...we are all here to learn (except for a few dickheads
). I would agree that you need to adjust your carb...you're running rich.

More than likely your floats are set too high for climbing steep grades. The fuel bowl fills up and on a steep grade will slosh over through the vent and pour down the venturi....flooding the cylinders. Adjust your floats a little at a time and see what works best cause if you go too low, stabbing the throttle on flat ground may will starve the bowls.
Don't ask how to set your floats unless you know exactly which carb you have.
