diesel 4bt conversion tech

I've been researching(yeah a newb can do that ) on how to put a cummins 4bt in a jeep. I thought I'd share some of the links here so other newbs would have an easier time finding stuff and quit pestering the guys who've 'been there, done that' so much. Theres a lot here that doesn't apply directly to a 4bt but can help with other engine/diesel conversions as well. Feel free to add any links to forums/writeups, suppliers or anything you might want to add. A special thanks to dieselcruiserhead, McInfantry, and CumminsBronco for their great tech. Search these names before ya start asking simple questions cause they've answered most of them several times over. I just wanted to say thanks. That's a great list of links. One of my goals once out of college is to build a jeep with a cummins 6bt or 6at probably. I want a diesel, but I want it to be fast. I've got my slow diesel now, so I want something fast now.

Good luck with your swap, and if you do it, make sure and post some progress.

Do you have pics of your diesel swaps? Just how fast do you want it to be? I don't think I posted the link to the future land speed record car, its a 29 ford with a 4bt, inline pump. The team expects to hit 175 mph next summer. http://www.malloracing.com/ is the site

16cm turbo
the rear sump oil pan starts 10" from rear, and roughly 15" from the front with a height (or hangs down) 5"

the reason the oil pan is included is the height was an issue with front diff clearance. i do not believe the 6bt is necessary, but i dont have one..... cooling is a non issue on a 4bt. it cools too well with a stock m715 radiator

im the only 715 with a 4bt.......

Did you change the thermostat? What temps do you usually run? Are you running 35's now?

no on the thernostat. it runs around 185, unless i run it at 75mph (max speed) and it will climb to 190. ill wait and see how it does this winter

summer it runs 190~200 (at75) no fan

im looking at some hummer tires. i need to check the size. i need to get out of the 1100x16's

I also just found a link that has a lot of good specs on different engines. After looking at the specs of the 4bt I'm not sure it's big enough. I'm thinking I might go with a 6, I just need to look up the specs to see which 6 has what specs and what they will bolt up to.

Nice. I'm assuming this is the SD-33? Looks like it was made to fit. What kind of fuel mileage to you get? I believe one of the links I posted has the cummins 6bt in a cj. If you don't see it, pm me I'll try to find it again. The 4bt could be made to have a lot more power than stock, especially if you can find a p-pump version. But if you can find a 6bt, itd cost about the same and could make A LOT more power. IMHO, though, you might want to shoot for putting it in something with a longer WB than a cj7- maybe a scrambler or unlimited? My factory 180hp/420tq rated dodge cummins can be squirelly off-road, mostly due to the weight not being evenly distributed.

How do your diesel cj's perform off-road? Have you noticed any better performance than a gas engine?

i dont believe a 6bt can fit in the hood of a cj. length or height.
im 3780lbs on the front axle and 2500lbs on the rear at 126" wheelbase.
the motor is TALL. and its about 300+lbs heavier.

but i say do it. take pictures, and i want to see it. i was told i couldnt do what i did....

Who said you couldn't do what you did? You did a great job, and I'm not downing that, but I've seen 6bt's in m715 trucks. Not an easy fit, but fit they did. I've seen at least 2 dodge dakota's with them, as well as a few s10's. Its nuts to do so, and probably isn't balanced well for practicality, but it fits. I have a pic on my HD of a 6bt in what I think is a fj40?(has vented hood), non intercooled. I can't find anything on the 6bt in a cj-7, but if I remember right it had the hood and fenders lengthened 6 or 7" (plus spring over). One thing that makes your front end so heavy is that old thick sheet metal(gotta love it ) and the fact your winch is rated for what, a deuce and a half?

As for the stock cj-7 frame taking a 6bt, I wouldn't want to try that... maybe a trussed yj frame? I plan to use a wagoneer frame for my 4bt cj-7/8ish project.

plenty, plenty of people said it.

the two m715's addresed the 6bt in two seperate ways.
1) springover lift
2) 3" cab lift.

i wanted neither. also the intercooler is another issue. one never ran one, the other moved the radiatior forwards, iirc. there are clearance issues

there is an m37 with one and he had to lengthen the nose. im not saying it cannot be done, its just alot of work for a REAL nose heavy swb jeep. also i have 1hp per 70lbs. horrible ratio, but it works. i think a 4bt would be more than enough for a cj7

No pics, but I have seen at least 2x Scout II's with a cummins 6bt in them. I couldn't believe it. I like the idea of diesel in my fullsize GMC, but a 4bt would be better for a lot of reasons. Keep up the good work

Yea, I did some more research. I'm not so sure the 6bt is such a good idea since it is soo heavy.

I just wanted to make something that was diesel, and fast, something that I could like smoke some of the stock sports cars.

The engine definatly does fit well, there isn't much extra space.

Basketcase thanks for putting all of these links together..! It took me ages to get mine up and running but no regrets whatso ever I love it, great mileage and I have it at 160 hp but more importantly 350+ ft/lbs easily, it flies up the high altitude steep 5 mile + grades in 5th no problem at all. My only mild complaint is yes it's loud but that can be addressed. Here is the detailed buildup of mine. Someday I will put together a good website on it with pics, details, writeups etc....

Here is the best thing going so far. I also need to badly update my website as well. Weight it about 700-800 lbs-ish....

Good mornin, my name is Stephen. I am putting a 4bt into a 1966 bronco half cab. I have the 4bt, now looking for the toughest and easiest transmission to put behind this 4bt. Would like to keep my original transfer case if possible. I am looking at the trasmission from a 2000 dodge 4x4 5 speed manual, 360 gas truck. It is slightly shorter than the same transmission out of the larger diesel. Would really like to speak with someone that has done this before. thank you for your time.
