Need opinions and advice on purchasing a used Rover
The wife is thinking about selling her car and getting a used 99-01 Discovery 2. We need something with more room. One of my coworkers has a 96 Discovery with 170,000 miles on it and swears by it that it is the best vehicle he has ever had. If we get one, it might see some green trails, but it will primarily be the family vehicle. As much as can respect them for what I've seen on the trails, I have apprehensions about maintance cost.
Are there better years to look for? What are known problems. Thanks! |

As far as I'm concerned, the above wasn't even a question. And he should feel so blessed as to have not pissed me off.

The wife is not interested in a minivan or any other car. She wants a Disco I or II. I heard Ford put their foot up LR's ass and things have been getting better but I'd like some input as to what year(s) should we be looking at. |

1968??? Well, my '71 can go downhill and uphill with the best of them. I think that there might be some breakfast bias going on here.
![]() And speaking about maintenance costs, well, if you have to ask then it might not be the best vehicle for ya' misses because it is going to take two things in order to make it a successful marriage between land rover and you: unlimited amounts of cash and the undying love for an inanimate object. Your rover will ask a lot of you and usually at the most inopportune time, but you must reach down deep into your person. Deep into the very soul of your being. Past the heartache and anger of the countless times it has left you stranded. Past the numerous trips to the parts store where your requests for rover parts are greeted with dumbfoundedness. Past the ridicule of your friends and family members as to why it spends more time in the shop then on the road. Past the countless bills that you have incurred from parts places, local and abroad, machine shops, tool companies, etc. Past all of these things because the point of it all is that you bought this rover because you love it and it loves you and nothing else matters. That is what you need in order to own such a beast. Once you understand this and grasp it with open arms, then the rest will be easy. If not, well, you will drive yourself insane as to why you bought such an expensive lawn ornament. But, that's just my opinion. And it helps to have a couple of grand laying around in case anything arises such as previous owner fixes or broken CVs or when the engine decides to drop a liner. Also, having a vested interest in any oil company makes the transition easier.

As for being a "Dan" and being "butt hurt"... Just because I don't have 10,000+ posts doesn't mean I haven't been around long enough to know that some people have an omnipotent ego problem.
