Personal limitations of manual steering?

I love manual steering, to a point. I'm a simple kind of man, and up to now it's worked fine for me. No problems at all up to 34"s, but started to show its limitations after I installed a front locker. Still tolerable, but not very pleasant to have your arms cramping up whenever things get hairy on the trail. Now that I'm going bigger, I'm convinced I'll have to swap to power... though I don't really want to.

At what point for you does manual steering completely break down? Could you armstrong 44's if the steering was set up just right and the front locker was disengaged?
