which k5?

Before I start I just want to say hi as I am a newbie to this forum. I used to have a newer chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 but the ifs couldnt handle much wheeling . Ive always loved the k5's and I want to have a sfa truck for my 4wheeling pleasure. My question to you guys is what year k5 to look for and why ? Im not too familiar with older vehicals so I figured you guys could point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance

Pretty much any k5 is the same. The 73's and newer have a large aftermarket support for body panels and shiat.

I'd look for fuel injected (I believe 87? and newer) and run it.

Good luck.

87 and up are fuel-injected, but you have to deal with 10 bolt axles front and rear and a 208 tcase with a slip yoke. If you plan on an axle swap, then no big deal. 73-78 came with Dana 44 front, 12 bolt rear, and some had gear drives tcases (205). Pretty stout from the factory for light to mid wheeling.

Check out http://www.coloradok5.com/specs.shtml for the factory specs of every year of the K5.

Thanks for the info, I do plan to swap in a 14b/d60 combo if i get one so ill definately be looking for an 87-up. I plan on using this rig to teach me how to work on truck so ill be doing most of the work on it myself if I can. That means I should get the truck this summer and be done 2035. Thanks for the link also, that has a ton of info.

BTW would those military k5's be somethin to look at? CUCV I think is the name of them with beefed up axles? I figured the good old boys at the base prob beat the crap out of them so I doubt anything would be in good shape.

military blazers had the 6.2 diesel blazer which was a bit under powered. the 89-91 k5 blazers are fuel injected sfa but have the newer 241 transfer case that there is sye kit for.

I would also think about your smog laws if any. Could restrict your buildup. I think our exempt year here is '75 and older.

believe me, it wont be long before you swap out damn near every factory part. IMO, the only thing to look for (that you're gonna keep long term anyway) is a decent fuel injected engine. AFAIK, TBI started in 1987 on K5s. Whatever ya get, get FI.
