Would you use this ????

Would you use this ????

I got this axle for free and want to put it under my truck, it has been sitting for a while. There is no oil in the diff and some water down there. Im trying to keep this projects expense down to a minimum. Should i just clean it out and if the bearing are hosed just replace later ?

Ps.. I was told this axle has a locker.. ?? Is that thing a gov lock ??
Doesnt look like a locker to me ..

Ps... If this was rig was to see the road often i would definatley replace it. Seeing how it is a trail only and the most road it would see is on the way to the trail head, im contemplating just cleaning it out and throwing it in. ( 14B )

Thumbs up

Iv'e only seen one once (gov. lock) but that loks like one to me. As for useing it, OH YEAH!! Just clean it out reall good (brake parts cleaner) and if it wer me I would put syntetic 90W-140 in it just to be safe. The gears look GREAT, and the bearings should wear in agan just fine. Just be sure to run it eazy on flat ground for a few miles before U go out and wheel the hell out of it.

As for the carrier, hard to actually tell from the pics if it is a gov lok or open carrier. I know the open carrier looks just like yours externally.
Either way, the gov lok is a pile of shit. It is not a real locker by any means, just a glorified limited slip.

The rust is nothing. Really hard to tell how bad anything is damaged right now. Obviously, the gears look ok. I would be more concerned about the pinion and carrier bearings. Depends up on how long the unit actually ran in this condition, or if the rust is something that happened after it was removed from service. Only a complete disassembly, clean up and inspection will tell you that for sure (but you were going to do that anyways, right?).

If shit's not pitted much (if at all), sure, run it.

Put a big magnet in there on the cover to help collect the metal fragments, rust and shit that'll end up in the oil (JB Weld epoxy glue (the LONG-cure stuff), or BLACK RTV will hold a magnet no prob. Just clean the surface good)

That's an open carrier. You can see the side gear in one of the pics, so there is no DL in there either.

You might want to run it for a while with the cheapest gear oil you can find, then change the oil and run a synthetic like suggested above if you're worried.

gov locks look cooler, work like shit, but are all cool looking. they have a machined body and are smooth and taperd towards the passenger side .
