What Axel's sould I look for CJ-5??

I don't know what all is involved in an axel swap. Help me break down my choices, for the easiest and toughest swap... D60, 14 bolt, 9 inch or what...Love to put the hammer down and run hard.. so what would be the best choice for my 72' CJ-5? I know It's a newbie question but need help..

Their are a lot of questions, that need to be asked first.

1. How much lift are you running?
2. What size tire are you running?
3. What type of wheeling?
4. What year CJ5 (centered or offset diff)?
5. What type of wheeling do you do and where?

Also, search and ask more specific questions as this is really too general a question. This question as it is should have been asked in the newbie forum. If you want to earn point with the PBB delete it and repost in newbie.

My 72 came stock witha dana 44 rear and Dana 30 Fornt, Both measureing in at 50.5" IIRC WMS to WMS rear diff is centered, and Both have the 11" drum brakes, I have contemplated you exact question many times, with yet to answer this myself. Good Luck, I am leaning at the moment to buying and building a 14 bolt rear shortened to 54.5 WMS to WMS and a Waggy 44 Front shortened to 56 WMS to WMS. Why some of you may ask, I want to be able to keep the jeep a little narrower for the tighter trails where Full size alxles have hard times going and I dont plan to ever run more than 35s or 36 inch tires. One thing you will want to consider though is that the Springs on Pre-76 jeeps are extrememly narrow compared to Later models you may want to outboard and run YJ or Later model CJ springs when you Convert.

5-ton rockwells and don't look back. They should hold up to almost anything you can throw at them. Even with a big lift you should still have good driveline angles, unlike all the other crap axles out there.

Tire choices shouldn't matter, they might drag on the ground with stock tires, but I get the feeling that you know how to lay the smack down realllllly good and this wouldn't hold back a bad ass mofo like you that loves to put the hammer down and run hard.

True that. We can't (and won't) do your work for you. Too many times I see posts that sound like this: "I'm here fawkers, I've paid no dues (money-wise or technically) and I don't know jack, but I expect you to spoon feed me all the info that I need." Puhleeze.

What have you done for me lately [/rant_off] Sorry, I just see this too damn often.

You need to research your options here and from other technical sources first. At least get a concept of what you want. Present the concept, ask for direction, contribute to your efforts. 'Putting the hammer down and running hard' tells us something, but what about frame mods, out-boarding spring mounts, increasing axle width, articulation requirements, and all the other questions posted above? And what about your technical background and capabilities? Can you weld or bend tube, do you want to set up gears, add a locker or two, or gear the rig to the hilt? And the rig, will it be a daily driver, on/off trail, or trailer queen? Any of this info helps us help you.

FWIW, I wanted a trail/rock learning rig that can be made to run on the road when necessary. I want capability and scalability should I want to really go balls-out in the future. To that end I built modularity into the design of my -5 (that is, to one day accept the 60's upgrade), taking into account punkin location when designing spring mount width (32.5" ctr-to-ctr for me). I began with Waggy D44's stretched to 94" of WB. Those axles are roughly 61" WMS-to-WMS. Saginaw Waggy power steering, high steer & FF conversion, lockers, gearing, alloy shafts, blah blah. 4.3L TBI, 465, twinsitck d20. 36" IROKS on H1 beadlocks. I've posted progress pics before here.

Sorry to rant, but dayam, do some research

AMC 20 for the rear with 2 piece axles and Dana 27 for the front, should be fine.

You sir, give Newbies a bad name. And yes, you do need help. I suggest that you do a lot more research and limit your posting to the Newbie forum until you can ask a logical question.

I'd always take Axel Mercx over Axel Rose, but I run axles on my Jeep.

Put some Chromo axles in them and you will be fine with the 35" tires you say you want to run. They can be found on our site. Other options are out there as a swap but suggest you buy them from someone like RockCrusher, Dynatrac, etc. If you research around, there are also some great guys/builders that can build to your specs. If you're thinking of building them yourself, it will cost way more money in the end if you don't have the proper tools/knowledge.
