4.0 harmonic balancer measurement

On a 88 MJ with a 4.0 engine, how far apart is the harmonic balancer and the front of the timing chain cover?

Story: Basically the guy who built my stroker messed up somewhere and now my balancer will not line up with all of my other belt driven stuff, it doesn't go "in" far enough for the belt to go on the balancer.
I've tried cutting .25" off of the crank snout and .25" off of the back of the balancer but it still won't line up, i.e. go back towards the engine.
