What tranny to run behind 04 GM 6.0
Im putting a 6.0 from a 04 GMC pickup in my 92 YJ when I return from overseas and I want to start getting things planned out and searching for parts. I dont know much about transmissions at all so here are my questions.
What transmission would be good to run in my YJ behind the 6.0 and what makes said transmission the one I should run? I would like to use my current transfercase as well due to budget. So adaptability could be a deciding factor also. My current TC is a D300 with HD output and 4:1 kit. I know Im going to have to do driveshaft work no matter what so Im not really concerned with that. I can get the stock 4L80 that was on the motor for $900. 17000 miles on it. What about a TH350 or 400? I have some machining expierience and have several machinist friends so if necessary I can have an adapter built. Ive read that the 4L80's are heavy but tough and that some older 700R4's are weak. What about a 4L60? Like I said I dont know much about transmissions and what bolts to what to save money and so on, any help and firsthand expierience would be great. EDIT: Im currently running stock 4.0 with AX15. I want to run an automatic.

I would run the 4l80e, it is essentially a 400 w/ a over-drive. All the strength you need plus you get an over drive as a bonus.
As for the 4l60e its basically the same as the 700R4 with a few more electronic controls. It seems to share the same weaknesses and is well beyond its limits to hold up to a 6.0 without a decent performance rebuild. Being that the engine already came with the 4l80e behind it I would defiantly run it. Plenty strong enough and no need to reprogram the computer and rewire the harness for a different tranny. Hope that helps, Conrad Edit for spelling Last edited by 1998chevy1500; 02-14-2006 at 07:17 PM. |

That sounds pretty good to me. Will the stock output shaft on a 4L80 go into a D300?

Turn Key
Sound like money is an issue, but I would definetly give the guys @ Turn Key a call about their computer/ wire harness system for the 6.0. Buddy of mine is running that motor in his Cruiser. What a great motor, for the extra money he got their harness. SUPER freaking clean set up. He also ordered a computer from them. It does away with all the unnesc. stuff. If I recall he's pulling better than 400+ hp and really torquey(spl?) It's the way I'm going on mine in the future. BTW, his motor is out of a 02. Sorry for the hijack, but figured good info for you to keep for the future.
PM me if you need any other insights on that note, Campy
