5.29 gears?
I have a 1987 4runner, it has auto trans. and 4.30 gears, 235-85-16 tires and a 2" body lift. it doesnt seem to have lots of power, the motor has about 30,000 miles on it. It is really good in low range, not in high. Any help would be apreciated.

4cyl with an auto is going to be a dog. Personally I think your gears are about right. 4.56 may help some but the cost involved wouldnt be worth it. Any lower and you will be severly limited on highway speed

I dont mind the highway speed I live in central nevada the most highway I have is about 10 miles and the speed limit is 55 anyway. I just came into a little chunk of $ and am looking at spending about $3,000.00 on this thing I was thinking about lockers in rear and suretrac in front. with a change of gears as well.

if youre not worried about freeway 5.29s will be fine. I ran 33's with 5.29s for awhile and i actually kinda liked it, i think i was around 3k on the freeway in 5th, but thats where the motor starts making power. By some calc. i found with google it looks like your tires are equivelent to 32's so i think you'll be okay on the road, and probably like the extra gear on the trail. Also if you go to a larger tire, you'll already have the gears to turn them.

Like Al Kaholick said, I ran 5.29's with 33's and it's fine everywhere except when you want to do 75mph+ on the freeway. You'll love the extra power and what the new locker & limited slip will do for you offroad. I just put an aussie locker in my yota and it works really well. I've used detroits, lockrights and arbs and for the money you'd love the aussies. Good luck with your build.

I ran 5.29's on mine with 36" TSL's and it was more than enough power. It would pick up the front wheels in 1st and again in 2nd. Little overkill, but whatever you like.

I had a manual transmission and yes I am talking about a toyota, it was a 98 Tacoma, 4 cyl. 2.7(?) I think. It would pick up the front tire about a foot on takeoff, and about 2-3" when changing from 1st to 2nd.

Well I can't really prove it to you. I no longer have the truck, but it's ok if you don't believe it, I don't care really, just trying to help him out with his decision. I used to have a video of it doing it at the track, some buddies of mine made. It's cool though, I mean if you think about it, I don't know why it's so un-believable. Maybe on an old 22RE it wouldn't but it did in my 98.

Whether you have the truck still or not isnt the point. If you had footage like that you would still have it, pictures at least, esp at the "track"

Well you have to understand the "Track" is a shithole place down the road from where I live, the "footage" was on a camera phone, and no I don't have it and it's impossible to snap a picture on that, or at least I'm not a good enough photographer.
And the POINT is that it DID happen, I don't care if you don't believe it, I know that it's crazy that it would happen but it did, but I'm really through with the argument. It's just turned into a "yes it did", "no it didn't" thing. I don't care. Actually you know what it never happened I made it all up so that I could be more manly, I thought that if I could impress you with my 4-banger I'd be more of a man and my balls would swell exponentially...give me a break, haha. Its actually kinda funny. Anyways, I don't own a toyota and probably never will again, it's cool though, to the guy who wants the 5.29's for the little tires, get em and then let me know what you think.
