Major Newb ? About Gear Strength

( Flame suit on )
Not sure but shouldn't a Dana 60 gear set be able to handle a driveshaft u-joint breaking under very little throttle with a 4.0L?
Running 5.38 Reverse thick gears in the rear diff and seem to have chipped the pinion.
Yukon gears if that matters. only ones I could find that made 5.38 reverse thick.

keep in mind there was a sudden change in speed between 2 moving parts, something gave. If you've only chipped the pinion a little, I wouldn't worry about it. Just stick it back together and run it. However, more than a little damage may call for a part replacement.

When I set up these gears I spent alot of time. I made sure the pattern was perfect and had one of the best guys in town come to my house to check them out. They ran very quiet and had no problems even driving 1200 miles to Moab where I then broke the u-joint on Double Whammy.

Dunno, backlash was good, pinion preload was good. Everything seemed to be on the money.
Just thought maybe there was something else. When I called my local supllier he contacted Yukon and said they had a couple sets recently that did the same but not sure what gear sets those were.
Oh well.
Thanks for the input guys.
