Broken axle stub in birfield

Well I broke one of all-pros inner shafts this weekend, and now I have a stub of the axle stuck in my birfield. I've tryed a vice grip clamped on the broken stub and a weight attacked to the vice grips then pounded it down the way you would inside a piece of pipe to break the inner snap ring. Is there a better way to do it? Any help or tips is appreciated thanks
