Start up squeal... can't figure it out

I've got an 89 Toyota 3.0 six cylinder. Everytime I start it when it's cold, it squeals. I've changed belts, tightened belts, used belt dressing. It still squeals. I can rev it up, and it will quit, then it wont do it until I shut it off and then start it again. Any ideas on what to do? It's starting to aggrivate me.

does it only do it when its cold or can it be warm and you shut it off and start back up it squeals? sounds like it could be a bearing, if its not the belts being too tight.

I have a similar problem on my 1999 4runner with the 3.4L. Haven't checked it out yet, but my guess it was a belt or something. I am interested to see what ur problem is if its not the belt.

If its not a belt, then it might possibly be a bearing in the water pump or alternator.

It very seldomly squeals a bit when it's warm. I just had a thought though. My AC compressor is siezed.... wonder why I didnt think about that earlier.

Check the tensioner bearing.

A belt squeal is almost unmistakeable. IS there a tensioner bearing in the ac compressor ? You say your ac compressor is SEIZED. Does the pulley spin ? If you could get someone to start it for you then you could stand infront , mark with a white marker , and see if it doesn't spin for the "start up" , which would be why it's squealing. Also if that is the case. I think the intervals you're supposed to change your belts at are so short that you would be okay with that squeal for a couple extra weeks if you can't afford that AC compressor. You're not going to use that Ac compressor this winter so that could wait. Can you get the Compressor REPAIRED ? Also make sure you have the right TYPE of belt for the pulleys you have. You know..... VBelt, V RIBBED ! belt .............

A buddy of mine has a cherokee that does the same thing. We replaced belt, alternator, and pulleys. Still haven't figured it out yet usually just rev it up a couple times and it quits. I guess we will just deal with it.

check the tensioners and pulley bolts. I had a squeal that turned out to be the harmonic balancer wobbling because the crank bolt head broke off....grrr

I dont know how it compares, but our snow cats at work, when the fan clutch starts to go, sometimes they will squeal real bad on cold start up, sounds just like a belt squeal. never heard a car fan clutch do it, but i guess if a larger fan clutch can, maybe a car one could too?

take the belt off and start the truck cold. see if you can get it to make any kinda noise. no noise so turn each pully to see if anything feels "scratchy" bearings are going outa something this is the easyest way to tell
