im a bit of a newbie when it comes to fuel injection so i figure this is a good place to post my problem
its a 91 4runner with a 22re...the timing chain guides were broken and i could hear the timing chain slapping around...but i decided to drive it anyway . i was driving down the road when the truck began to loose power and then lost oil pressure...then the truck died...so popped the hood checked fuses, oil and everything i could with no tools on the side of the road...fired the truck back up and it ran but was guttless drove it down the road and the oil pressure would come back to normal then drop again and when it would drop i heard a squeek then it would come back up...then it dropped again and the truck died and i had no power, even to the key..
i figured it shutting down was a saftey thing in the computer....ive taken the valve cover off and the guides were broken like i thought and the tensioner is no good...but i dont see why that would cause the oil pressure to jump around then kill the truck
check the radiator for fluid. If the guides are gone, the chain can rub holes in the timing cover which has water jackets in them. Antifreeze migrates into the oilpan and kills the bearings.
There could be broken guide parts pluging the oil pick up or pump.
It has to come apart to do the guides, so I would pull the oil pan to investigate.

tore it a apart...someone had put a longer bolt into the top bolt of the oil pump and wouldnt let the tensioner go all the way out...so aside from that...i have a new timing set sitting here....but if its a spun bearing then there is no point in putting it in...
i was gonna drop the pan but you have to drop the front end in these ifs rigs...
im in a toss up if i should throw it back together or fuck it and junk the motor...
is there anyway i can find out if a bearing has spun with out dropping the pan?? i dont think there is...
Dealing with timing stuff on 22re is not that bad, what you can do is put all your new timing stuff on, put it back together and run it and see if you still have oil pressure issues and noises, maybe it will be fine maybe it won't, all you can do is try.
well only one guide was broken...and it was broken in half so no chunks of guide are floating around...i more than likley spun a bearing...cause the motor was making more noise than usual after the hole ordeal...if im lifting the motor off the motor mounts than im yanking the bitch outa there...guess ill slap it back together and hope for the best...
if all else fails i could jam some banana peels in there and sell it  :barf:
I've pulled a few pans off of IFS trucks, and it wasn't too bad (with air tools). Pull front DS, Drop the 3 bolts that hold the front diff up, I did a crank in one, and had to pop the center link off at the pitman and idler, then pulled front tires apart dropping centerlink. You can drop the pickup into the pan and pull it all out together, or pry up the baffle a little and work it out, leaving the pickup. Double check this with someone else, as I may have had the trans out to do this.
