Alright, the weather has been pretty bad here in Oklahoma and I think my limited slip ate shit.
I have a 2001 Ford F150 Supercrew 4x4 with a Sterling 10.25 rearend w/ limited slip differential.
Alright, heres the scenario....when the right rear tire spins, it will spin freely and make a noticeable clicking noise and gets louder the faster the tire spins. However, sometimes both tires will spin and it appears the LS is working. Then, it will start doing the "one-wheel-wonder" where only the rear right tire spins and makes a loud clicking. Im almost positive the Trash-loc is done but what next?
Heres my options as I see it...
1. Rebuild the trac-loc with a rebuild kit from Ford Motorsport or Summit.
2. Get an automatic locker that fits inside the carrier...like Detroit No-Spin?
3. Full Detroit. $$$
This is my Daily Driver and serves as my Tow Rig. I pull a 4200lbs Tige Wakeboard Boat and a flatbed w/ a wrangler on it. I cant have something very harsh locking and unlocking all the time.
I would suggest a detroit tru-trac. Very mellow on the street but will give you plenty of traction when you need it. I had a 10.25 with a trac-loc and it was still a pile of shit after I rebuilt it.
10.25 in an F-150?
id suggest a powertrax no slip, basically the same thing as a Lock Right. cant remember what this Detroit No-Spin is like. I have the powertrax is my Dodge(see sig) and its a DD. I barely notice it on the road except when im gassing it around a corner(well, a sharp corner). It does click, but I cant hear it over my exhaust over, say, 15mph. I like the clicking though, its relaxing
I hate tow rigs with auto lockers, they feel jerky.
I vote to just get an open carrier and put it in. Ford track-loc's are called "Trash Locks" for a reason, they really suck. The holding power on one is a joke.
besides a Stock open carrier is a stronger carrier then a LSD carrier.
I think for now Im just going to run it until it blows. We are about to get another 10'' of Snow here in OKC and I bet this will be the last of the trash-loc.
Like I said before...it works about 50% of the time, the other 50% it just makes a lock-rite clicking noise while on the gas and the right rear tire spinning.
Im pretty sure its a 10.25.....I may be wrong but its pretty damn big. I can post pics if need be?
The 4.6's got an 8.8, the 5.4's got a 9.75 Sterling. It looks big (it is big), but its no 10.25. The 10.25 was 8 lug full floater in the older F250/350's. It got bumped to a 10.50 in 99 when they went to the Superduty body style. The 9.75 looks every bit as big as a D60 at the pumpkin. The 10.25 looks like something out of a dump truck.
Ive been trying to find that information on ford truck rearends for some time now. Thanks for the info. 45. I was way off...I dont know why I thought they 10.25's...They do look the same atleast dont they?
same ring gear size as a dana 60, but with a much larger pinion, and much larger shafts.
I'd either rebuild the trac-lok, or put in a detroit.
My ol' man's 03' has a trac-lok in it, and still works great at the 80K mark. You just have to remember, that any LS rearend is only good for a fairly short amount of time(other than tru-trac)
