If you aren't going to do any tough offroading whatsoever I guess you could go up to 38s, maybe a little more but I don't want to condone it. And like I said, this is ONLY if you are just talking about riding in the parking lot, and riding on just dirt trails/mud.

True mall crawlers can get away with 44" tires on Dana 44 axles. Just don't go wheeling.

His trucks gonna be tall, he bought my old springs, and I was runnin' 46s I coud've fit 49s. I've talked to him several times and this rig is pretty much gonna be street. His original plan was to run 40s, but he ended up going with Sky's 6" hangers, so now his height will be comparable to what mine was.
Locally there are no trails like what ya'll are used to. Their are really just mud pits and from what I've got from talking to him it's not going to be running those. So do ya'll think opened diffed with 44s on the street no problems?

there are people that break dana 60's with 35's, and people that run 44's with a dana 44 and live. it really depends on the rig, and the driving style. back in the day, my dad used to do burnouts on dry pavement with a scout 44 and 40" ground hawgs and locked. he ended up breaking the output shaft on a T18 of all things. it depends. i know with a light rig, and my passive driving style, i could probably make a 44 live for quite some time with 40's. but i would also be sure to keep extra shafts with me. remember, if you arent prepared, something will go wrong. but if you prepare then chances are much higher that nothing will go wrong.
on the street, the bearings are what is going to suffer with larger tires and a 44. also, the brakes are going to be inadequate for pretty much anything over a 36". so if cost is an issue, and you cant afford a dana 60, at least get a 3/4 ton 44, some will have bigger brakes and occasionally bigger brakes. but dont complain when people say they told you so when you are stranded.
