OK, question: is there somethingmagical about having a 104" or close to it wheelbase? I've been researching with the hopes of building a rig of my own and most of the rigs have that wheelbase...

Enlighten me, oh Rock Crawling Gurus....

WB is more or less a preference. there is no magical 104". and a lot of it depends on how tall or wide you are, and what tire size.

I am looking at portals with 42's.

Right now, I'm in SW MO so I have Disney, OK and some others that are in MO. I was looking to build a tube chassis, but was wanting to find a suitable frame as a starting point. I want to build a rig that'll seat all 6 of us (me, my wife, and 4 kids).

typically the larger your setup is (axle width, tire size, amount of lift, ect) the more wheelbase you are going to want. EXAMPLE: having 42"s on a 90" or less wheelbase would suck compared to say 110".

It's all personal prefrence combined with what/where/how you want to wheel.

I'll be going 110-120" in my buggy build

I started with a 95 YJ it is stretched out to 107" 60/14 combo on 42" Iroks. Rock gardens require articulation so shorter wheelbase can work,but if you do any inclines you start needing longer wheel bases.

That's Suburban range and quite doable....I had thought abotu that WB, but thought is was too long.

where in MO are you? how close is that to springfield?
