9" minispool install
I won an auction for a $20 new minispool on ebay, and I'm looking to install it in a 4.10 3rd I'm getting for free in trade with a friend who only needs a bare case...and I just found out today that I'd need to split the carrier to swap out the spiders for the spool...I'm alright with setting backlash again and whatnot, but I can't for the life of me find out how to take the carrier apart.
Here's an open carrier that came out of the 9" case I'm trading to him...I see the pins but those aren't screws holding the pins in place....they look like dowels or just round tube. Excuse the noobness, I'm used to Dana carriers with the open holes in the sides. Last edited by TJVigilante; 05-16-2007 at 10:07 PM. |

If you're just putting the minispool in your current member, you should not have to adjust your backlash or make any other adjustments. The pins you mention are roll pins. Take a punch or drift that has a smaller diameter and punch it out. This will free up the cross pin and you can then replace your spider gears with your mini. Replace the cross pin, put the roll pin back in it, and the reassemble your member...good to go.

See the thing is I need to remove the carrier from the 3rd to install the minispool in the 9", and it's got this wierd threaded thing instead of shims that set backlash, so I need to re-check it after I set it back in the 3rd.
Even if I remove the roll pins, I can't get the spool inside the carrier...the hole you see is the only opening into the innards. The pins are also covered by the ring gear when installed. Last edited by TJVigilante; 05-08-2007 at 10:13 PM. |

Well I gave it a shot today, for a little bit before my neighbor came out in a huff because I was pounding on the diff at 10pm. That thing wasn't budging...maybe tomorrow I'll give it a little more elbow grease and break it free.
The 4.10's I got for free seem to have a traction lock diff....it's got the recessed ring gear bolt seats and more than one hole in the carrier, but looking inside it doesn't show anything different from the open carrier in the picture. Am I supposed to notice clutch disks or anything through those holes? |

you have to remove the ring gear bolts to get the carrier split in half..
But anyways, put the mini back on ebay, and get a full spool, otherwise you will be doing it all over again when the cross pin breaks.

I can see the pic now, did you add it after I posted? or maybe it wasn't working.. either way.
Just split the case with a chisel.. or better yet, put in a full spool.
