90 chevy rear axle ?
I have a 1990 chevy 1500 4x4 and i noticed some metal shavings on the passanger drum, After looking at it i noticed the axle moves in and out about 1/8" and the axle is shiny were it slides in and out like it might be wearing there... The brakes are fine and not the issue for they are new and i inspected them. I dont know anything about chevy axles so need some advice on whats might be wrong. also is the axle a c clip axle?

Is the drum contacting the backing plate? if so, the axle bearings are shot.
The axle is a GM 10 bolt and does have C-Clips. to pull the axle you have to pull the rear cover, pull the crosspin, push the axle in, pull the C-calip, and then pull the shaft out. Justin

i think the fords, the newer ones anyways, are worse then the chevys, i work on lincolns alot and those things bang in and out like crazy.
it should have some play pulling in and out abou 1/8 sounds right but shouldnt have any going up and down. if your bearings were shot there would probably be fluid all over unless there aint any fluid, that would explain the bearings being shot

jack up the rear axle so the tire is about2 inches off the ground, and use a pry bar to move the tire up and downif there is play in the axle shaft the bearings are bad another good sign would be if the axle seal is leaking(behind the studs)
