If it is a sealed joint, replace it when they start to squeak or you see rust coming from the seals. Check your u-joints often!

Um yeah, you need to grease those every now and then. Just cause it doesn't have a grease zerk doesn't mean you can't grease it. It's called maintenance, you take it apart, grease it, put back together. Or when it starts squeaking you replace it.

yeah your u-joint could have been raising hell and you would never hear it. cherry bombs right off the headers cover up alot of squeaks im sure. take them apart and grease them? sounds like a major pain in the ass. I did buy one of those needle things for like $2 to adapt to my regular gease gun. i heard greasable joints are weaker.

Yeah it does huh. Well atleast it's better than being a broke dick jamming up the trail and holding up your group, probably with no spares too Maintenance goes alot farther than you think. I'd rather spend an hour-hour and a half in the garage making sure everything on my rig is in working order than fixing it on the trail. You don't have to take them apart every trip, once every couple months is fine. Although, I wouldn't want you to be inconvenienced and have to do maintenance as common courtesy to the others you are wheeling with who have. This is why I have a lack of patience for people on the trail who break due to lack of maintenance. What'd your wheel bearings/grease look like?

wheel bearings look like shit too.... they are greased tho... as a matter of fact i was in the lead when i broke and did hold up the group!
but that was good because i had a winch behind me to keep my ass from rolling down a hill... and there is no ammount of grease that could keep that u-joint from failing, the entire weight of my jeep was on that tire cut to the left stock 44 u-joint =
and it was a good thing i didnt have a spare, because it would have taken lots of time because there were not sufficent tools available to compleete the job and as a matter of fact as soon as i had tied down and secured the lose ends of the straps, it began to pour....

we got alot of wheeling in that day i dont think anyone was dissapointed

and besides, i was the one held up all day waiting for those fawkin cherokees to get up those hills and get out of the mud!

Instead of being the general badass of the newbie section, why don't you post something helpful, I did, you didn't. Judging by your name, you drive a Ford, so you should listen up too. Apparently carrying spare parts and tools is knowing everything? There's a lesson to be learned here, and apparently they've already figured it out. Refer to the following quotes for proof of learning.

As your buddy below you says, if you're greasing the wheel bearings, you're already half way there. Only a spindle/backing plate to go and you're there. Carry spares and tools next time!

Bend it back and keep it as a spare...or run it. either way bend it back so you atleast have a shaft. rather you junk it or brake it its going to be junk so might as well try it.
