Price Check on Isle 3 Please - Ford 8.8

How much are Ford 8.8s worth (out of a 95 Explorer)?

I'm "looking" for one for the Jeep, but I have other projects on my plate right now. I have someone who's "willing to let one go" at $200 complete except for the calipers.

If $200 is a deal, then I can divert some funds from other projects, if not then I'll wait to wrap some other things up.

Thoughts?

doesn't sound like a bad deal. most 8.8s rotor to rotor ive seen go for between 200-250.

i got mine for about that and it was complete. try to haggle him down to 175 since it doesn't have calipers

on second though, just a quick look at advances website shows calipers go for about 50 bucks each. not so sure its a good deal. by the time all is said and done and youve got pads in there your look at around 320+

A bud of mine grabbed one with 4.10s, discs, and open diff for 65bux out of a junkyard complete last weekend for his cherokar... it needs brakes and rotors but its still a good deal after all that.

I got mine for $125 (on sale)at the local U-pull. That's with 31-spline axles, disc brakes, and open 4.10 diff. They're normally $150 there.
IIRc, 96 or 97 and up have the 31 spline axles which are better.
I would highly recommend that you go to a U-pull yard, where you will find approximately eight million Ford Explorers, and get one that is complete and geared how you want it. I doubt they will want more than $200 for it.
Also, the 8.8 is the best deal going for a fairly easy swap into a Jeep. It's just as good as a 44 but way easier to come by and has the 5x4.5 lug pattern.
Also, beware if you get one with limited slip, the carrier is larger than an open carrier and some lunch-box lockers won't fit. I had one with LS at first, it sucks for off-roading even after I put the carbon-fiber Ford Racing discs in it. Then I came across a free Gear-Trax locker, only to discover that it wouldn't fit. So I pulled that axle, sold it on craigslist for $250 (it was already set-up for a YJ and had freshly rebuilt LS), and bought another 8.8 for $125 and put the locker in that.
So no, $200 for an incomplete axle from a 95 is not a good deal.

~$150 all day long at LKQ in Houston (used to be Pick-A-Part) in the late model section. I say "around" $150 because it's been a while since I picked up a complete rear axle there...but I know it's less than $200. Besides that around Houston they seem to go for $200 to $300 depending on ratio. The 4.10LS axles are the ones always on the high end.

Of course...you'd be pulling it yourself so that might be worth the extra $50.

Really....

I don't mind pulling it, thanks for the info!!! Where's LKQ at?

Sounds like I can pass it up and not kick myself in the ass later, thanks guys!

There's two of them...one on Northville Rd (I45N just south of West Rd) and one on Wallisville Rd (610 east loop north of I-10).

http://www.houstonpickapart.com/

Be prepared to argue with the chick at the booth where you pay. The sign with the prices is posted outside the gate, so look at it before you go in so she doesn't try to charge you for a one ton axle or something higher priced.

Also...I forgot they're going to charge a core charge. So find someone who's got a blowed up D35 or 8.25 or something and take it with you to swap. It should still be under $200 even with the core charge though.

You didn't mention what ratio this one you're looking at has...if it is 4.10 it's probably worth it...they're a bit harder to find from what I understand. Then just pick up some calipers from LKQ for $15/ea.

Honestly, ratio doesn't matter much, the axle will be fully rebuilt before going under the Jeep, ratio hasn't been a "buying" point. The plan is 4.56, not sure that came in the axle I'm looking for..

The core, thanks for mentioning that. I don't have one, but I'll start looking around for someone wanting to ditch an axle.

A junkyard that has core charges? Wow, that really sucks.

Ya, doesn't make much sense does it?

It's not much, I guess they figure to make a few bucks on scrap steel.

Paid $100.00 for mine, LS, 3.73, with discs. It was complete from end to end.
