I have seen some pretty cool used buggy's in the classifieds here on Pirate. Some of them were used as race buggies, run in KOH, XRRA kind of stuff.

1. How reliable would a used "Race" buggy be? Have the engines all been run out to the max and suspension beat to hell?

They all seem to have nice upgraded gear that is older and used. It would be nice to have quality axles and steering setups at a used price.

2. Would a used "Race" rig be a good start to upgrade to the buggy level of wheeling?

I live in Farmington, NM and that would be the kind of wheeling I do. I'm looking to do tougher obstacles and need to go buggy to get there.
