Toyotas vs d44's for 37's on a 3500lb rig.
My dads building a rig and needs some input on axles.
Buggy will be tube frame with 4 link (possible 3 link in front) 104-108 Wb and no bigger than 37" tires. Plan on running a 4.3l (400lb) turbo400 or 350 (200lb) and a 203/205 doubler (240lb) We dont want to run full widths because this buggy will be small, narrow and light so were wondering weither dana 44's (scout2/wagoneer width) or toyota axles would suit the rig better? With either choice we will be running chromo shafts and joints. Seems like a waste to link a 44, kindof putting lipstick on a pig, but we need to be narrow and stay on a budget. So can chromo 44's or toyota's hold up to 37's, 250hp and 3500lbs? Thanks |

I vote chromo 44's with cryo'd ring & pinion, should be pretty strong. The d44 has a bigger ring gear than a toyota axle does, too.

I know, but the budget wont allow that. Also here in oregon/washington/northern cal area we have a TON of really tight trails that make it really hard on full sized rigs. Thanks for the input guys! Last edited by dboy; 06-23-2010 at 03:51 PM. |

I say go toyota.. But maybe that's because I work on them??
To make things interesting.. Go half and half!! Yota front with an Elocker, longs and links. jeep rear end? Honestly.. Just buy whatever you come across that's not torn to shit |

I actually really like this half and half idea.....I'm not sure if it would make anything really difficult with parts sizing (bolt pattern, u joints, ), but sounds like a cool compromise to me. Then if you find you like one or the other better, you could always swap out the other to make them match down the road.
