Stock Toyota e-locker?

I have a '96 4runner that came stock with a rear e-locker. I am planning on doing a SAS and I got an axle from an '83 toy. My question is can I swap the e-locker from the rear and put it in the front. I have heard yes and no. My '96 is a 3.4 V6 and the '83 was a l4.

yes, you'll have to modify the front housing, to take the third, and modify the rear housing to take a regular third after moving the eloker

Are there any threads that you know of explaining how this can be done?

Yes. Check out the toyota faq in the toyota forum. There should be a couple listed.

I ve heard there is problems with the axle engagement into the spider gears once the swap is done. I can`t find any info on this in the Bible.
ANyone have any info?
Also if you can fit the 4:10 ring and pinion off the stock 8" housing on an e locker ??

Good for you for paying attention.
This is not a problem 100% of the time. From what I've read, it can happen with v6 leaf-spring housings, but not 4runner/coil housings, sometimes when teh moon is full, sometimes when my wife's aunt flo is visiting. All joking aside, pull the shafts out and measure from the axle flange/bearing surface to the center pin inside the diff, and measure the same point on the axle to the end of the splines on the shaft.

It's not in the bible, but I'll try to find the thread in the forum.
Edit: Here it is:

A "v6" 8" 4.10 R&P will fit an e-locker. If you change bearings when you regear, make sure you buy a bearing set for an e-locker. The locking side is a larger diameter bearing than a standard v6 bearing set.

What if I were to just put the third from the rear already set up? Would it just bolt in? Then I could find a V6 third to put a detroit in the rear.

Just to add, 1986-95 ring and pinion is the same 4cyl or V6. Everyone calls them 4cyl or V6 but really they are early (79-85) and late (86-95). Inner pinion bearing is different. All the 4cyl aftermarket bearing kits are for the early style.

No it will not bolt in, you will have to modify both housings.

My advise is to leave the elocker in the rear, and run the detroit in the front. You will be able to steer alot better with the detroit in the front vs the elocker in the locked position. Also you wont need to modify the housings.
