Why are you at a crossroad? Is the Trooper having issues currently? If not, then just keep up with maintenance and it will go longer than you would think or others will admit.
The 3.2 is a STOUT engine if maintained. The Mua-5 trans is bullet proof. NEVER heard of one breaking. Sure the clutch will eventually go but its a consumable item.
Which reminds me...need to change my valve cover gaskets....

Old troopers are like any old car. It just isn't worth paying someone to fix them. On the bright side your trooper is a good vehicle that can live a very long time. I have yet to see a obd1 3.2 that has actually worn out. If you do basic repairs they seem to just keep going. You can ruin it by letting it run out of oil, over heat, and basic neglect. That goes for any car.
Clutches are clutches, the isuzu kit isn't much more expensive than a toy kit, and its the same labor either way. The isuzu clutch in the 3.2 is so much better than the toy stuff as well. Isuzu used the same tranny from '92 to '97 in pretty much everything with a 3.2, so used trannys are easy to find if you ever need one. Again, chances are that your tranny will last and last as long as you bother to change the oil once and a while.
You have a bunch of miles on your trooper, I have no doubt that it can go will into the 300k range, but the up side of the used isuzu market is that you can buy a newer trooper with less miles for cheap! I have been a little leary of the '98+ stuff, but a late model 3.5 that has been cared for is probably ok.

I am selling my 93 RS Trooper...the body and frame are crap but the DOHC motor and MUA5 tranny are strong...teralows are included! Would be a great donor.
It is good for a fly and drive, too bad you are so far away.

|chadburgin||Agreed, but the resale value of the trooper in comparison to replacing an engine, trans, or hell even paying someone to put a clutch in is not worth it. Therefore, if the trans or engine went out tomorrow, I would be left without a car at all since replacement parts are so high for the trooper. I can pick up a 22re or w56 for next to nothing so that is my delimma.|

as a daily driver, I would keep the trooper. No offense to the millions of 22RE fans out there but the Toyota 4-banger is a gutless wonder. A reliable wonder, but still gutless.
The extra power is always nice when beating around town.

92 Trooper 3.2 DOHC...what are my choices?
So here is the deal. I have a 92 trooper that I drive everyday. I love the size and the space of the interior and it seems to be built like a tank. However, it has 230k on it and I am at a crossroad. I just picked up an 89 4runner with the 22re and 5spd. Honestly, the body and frame of the trooper seem to be so much stouter than the 4runner but the 4runner is cheap as hell to repair! I looked online for engines for the 3.2 as well as replacement 5spds for when that time comes and man they are extremely high. If anything happened to either one of these I might as well junk the trooper. What are you guys doing when its time for an engine or trans? I am asking this because I am trying to decide which vehicle to keep...cheap to maintain yota or bigger more expensive trooper. Both would be my DD/camping vehicle.
