Yeah, a ring gear backed out of the front ring gear, and machined a big ass grove in it until it came out. when that happened, the ring gear ejected out the bolt out of the bottom!! ZERO 90w in the front, and I have no idea when that happened.
The rear had about about 3oz of 90 weight in it from RM 35 on and was smoking hot at the finish line. I took it apart and and the gears and bearings looked good as new. Since I already bought new diffs, I will re-seal it and use as a spare.

Hells yeah!! I will stock up on VP 110!!
Finally got home this afternoon, and pushed her in the garage. Tomorrow I will start tearing it down. New diffs should be here tomorrow as well. I am interested to see what the inside of the rear looks like and to see what walked out on the job on the front. Rhino drivetrains are known for there strength, so we will see.

I have raced HUNDREDs of miles in this car (NM,TX,AZ,NV.CA) and it has never been an issue. The suspension I'd a LSR +6.5" kit that have been used in Rhinos for years.
We pre-ran and beat on them all week, and nothing. Then at RM .5 both rears go.
If I blame anything, it's the Gorrillas on the rear, but I have a fix and will ensure it never happens again.
Oh, and Total Chaos built the chassis.

how do you build a full on race rig like this and the design is such that the CV axles wont even stay in place?
I read stories like this and while I have never built a full race rig from scratch I can promise you there would be plenty of testing to make sure something like that did not ruin a race event....
Good to see that you had fun and made 100 bucks to go towards your rebuilding budget....

Big thinks to sxsperformance for offering $100 to who ever finishes last!! The funny thing is, as soon as Jeff told us about it at Tech, everyone said I would get it!! Its my fourth "last finisher", so my podium is upside down!!
Believe me, I dont try to finish last, it just always seems to happen that way. At least i am finishing!
I did buy 2 t-shirts and a cool as beadbreaker from the SXSPERFORMANCE booth at tech, so Mrs Karma had my back!!

That ride to short bus was nice! Us texans have to stick together! Matt told me weeks before the race he would help get us to the finish, just glad he didn't have to use the tow strap like he wanted!!

Robs motor will get pulled apart tomarrow to start on the mint 400 prep. after i clean the 15 yards of dirt in the hauler from koh
it was really good time this year and im looking forward to going to vegas and helping rob at the mint 400 its gonna be a blast.

I wish I could remember Jeff Grass' screen name, I think its crawlinxj or something of the like. He built DSI's 4400 motor near 700 ponies and is now at it on Robs Rhino engine. Rob kept telling us XP guys that as soon as it gets the MJ motors treatment, our asses are "Grass".
It truly was the most fun KOH week for us as well. The last 3 years I've been right side in 4400 and what a brutal week, replacing parts, thrashing, not socializing, putting shit back together etc. We literally drank beer and terrorized camp all week and preran after we woke up for a bit 2 times. These things are awesome (XP's anyway, not sure about those Rhinos yet)
When we saw Rob's lanky Special F@&&0+ butt hauling over the hill to camp to get an axle and heard on his race frequency he was 3/4 mile from finish I asked Dave C if we could go back and help even though we had finished, he was like hell yes you can. We saddled up and made it so he didn't have to run literally over a mountain to finish. Matt helped him kick it on through, so I'm convinced that without the Jabnasty Texas brotherhood help to Rob they wouldn't have gotten it put back together and finished.
Rob, always good to see you, you are a good sport with our ribbing, always persevere to finish and even if you are special, you force your way to the checkers.
PS, I have a Camo toolbag with Rhino specific tools and parts in it available to the highest bidder.

To be fair...90+% of the UTV's in the race were either RZR XP or 800s...1st and 3rd were nearly stock 900 XP's. So it really looked like a factory roll out.
The Auburn Extreme Power Sports RZR XP entry finished 7th....we only had a flat and lost one Summer Bros axle.

1999 KOH recap
First, let me sat the this was my 4th year at KOH, and this was by far the funnest. I hung out with Team Nasty all week, and we visted a ton of people around camp while most thrashed to get the cars done. We never really worried about the UTV's! These things are fun, and compared to 4400's, super cheap!
The week started with Matt Enochs (jabnasty) and Kelly Kaiser (blacksheep90210) in the 1524 RZR XP and myself prerunning with Miles "I am a pretty big deal" Hasslequist, Ben and Sara. I've never had the Rhino in the rocks so we ran from RM2-27-ish, cut across and ran from 40-ish to 47-ish then back to camp. Had a great time and at least I knew the Rhino could wheel the rocks.
We continue to party, hang out, and everything else all week. On race day, we started on the second from last row in Production 700 with one other Rhino. We blasted off the jumps and around the corner.....then all forward movement stopped. Both rear CV's popped out. We got it fixed in about 40 minutes....and even had clear air for the rest of the day!! This is also were I didnt mount the rear tool bad properly and it removed it self shortly after. But luckily, the only tools I had left were the tools I needed to keep fixing the rear axles!!!
We are passing broken UTV's left and right all the way to about RM 32 when the left rear CV popped out again. This time it took the seal on the diff with it which I found out as Nick tried to add 90w and it all ran straight out on to the skid plate. We made it the 1/2 mile to the remote pit (wish we had of known it was right there), and topped off the oil, and shortened the limit straps. With no 90w in the diff, the CV's and differential housing all ready ruined, I decided to keep going.
Now we pretty much were donkeying along (normal pace...) and I really didnt think the rear end could make it. At Elvis, I take a bad line and we have to winch 6" (Venon winchs ROCK!!) and are on our way. The base of Elvis looked like a Polaris dealership, as did the rest of the course actually!
The ride through Fissure Mountain was pretty fun, except when I thought about the stress we were putting on the rear. The view up there is crazy. That was my first time being up there in the daylight. We made the HUGE hill climb just before Jack North, then realized we were off course as we celebrated.
Jack North was nothing to bad....just a long way down with 12" of clearance and 26" tires!
At Pit 2 coming back around, we topped of with gas and the guys checked the Rhino out. They said the rear end was a mess, and I told them it has been that way for 40 miles! Ben told me it was 9 flat miles to the finish and we took off (failed to mention Short Bus!).
Going up Short Bus, we destroyed the left rear CV. We tried to three wheel peel to the top, the broke out the trusty Venom 5000X winch. All we needed was about 3 or 4 good pulls and we would be at the top and down to the finish. Nope, the Venom couldnt do it (Venom winches suck...), and I didnt have 5 snatch blocks to rig it so it could. I told Nick he could run to my truck and get an axle, or I could. Since he smokes cigs and has a bad knee, I decided I would run down there.
I met Billy and the guys in my truck and got the axle (in the pits of course), and started running back. This is when Matt and Kelly pulled up and said I could have a ride (racers helping racers) if we stayed off of the course. 2 minutes later I was running back up to the Rhino and had it installed in a few minutes. With all four wheels turning, we made it right up and down to the finish with just under 2 hours to spare!! Because we were the last finisher, we won the $100 contingency from SXSPERFORMANCE. It was the only contingency prize that I was aware being offered, and I was paid immediately on the lake bed. That part was nice, since getting contingency money can be a PIA most times. I will also be ordering a pair of coilover covers for my shocks from them because the roost off of the front tires eats my rear shocks up. Again, Thank you!!
The front diff has a hole in it, the rear is toast, the engine leaks and burns oil, my pretty panels got rock rashed, but it was a fun day and an awesome course!
Jeff Grass from MJ Motorsports pulled the engine out on Friday and took it home with him to go through, then its MINT 400 time!!
