Remove the plastic sill on the drivers side door sill, it just pops out

take off the kick panel cover, one phillips screw, remove the plastic underdash cover, two screws on each end and it pulls loose

The computer is WAY up under the dash secured at the bottom by two 10MM bolts and the top tongue rests in a metal housing, after removing the botls it should fall free....

Once out get a samll phillips screw driver, turn the ignition,

remove the plastic cover on the computer and with the ignition on turn the screw all the way (forgot which way but it will only go one way) the check engine light should go off, wait two seconds , turn it all the way back, now we are in diag mode and shold be getting flashy codes out of the check engine light...

to clear codes turn the screw the other way .. wait two seconds and back again, no more codes

get a cheapie haynes manual for better instructions.

Wink thanks a lot

i finally had a chance to work on the pathfinder. Everything is now working fine. I did have a haynes manual, but your directions were much better than haynes. You should be writting those manuals.

96 should be OBDII and a scanner is needed to reset the light?

i think 96 is the last year for the when you can pull codes without the scanner - making things a little tougher for the do it yourself type. I don't know who is consulted when they do stuff like this but it is probably the way money wants it.

Dunno about that, my 2000 Xterra still has the little screw on the side, but it was dropped for the 2001 MY.

2000 is the last year for 96+ (R50s) to pull codes from the computer. In 2001 you have to have a scanner.
