Question Has anyone used the 4.2L Nissan Diesel ?

I have a Big box truck here.
it has the Nissan 4.2L Turbo Diesel in it.... like 1993-5 or something
40,000 miles.

Just thinking of making something out of it.
has anyone used this TYPE of motor. Not even THIS EXACT motor
But just a I-6 Turbo Diesel for an offroad application that you know of. ???

My concerns are...
Parts Avalibility.
2wd Auto Tranny now - what if any other trannys would work ?
Feasable on the trail ?
Doenst look too big. but is it heavy ?

Thoughts ?

Thanks Guys

That truck you have is called a "UD" truck. I'm not sure but I think there's a company (not nissan) that sells and deals them in the US. They are still being sold and parts are available from these dealers.

I doubt you'll find a 4wd tranny that will fit it unless by some chance a patrol one will...but you'll have even more trouble finding one of those. You'd be better using the existing tranny with a divorced t-case.

Sounds like a bad-ass setup though!

Just send it my way, I am sure I can get it to work in something... perhaps in my Patrol.

#1 Patrols are sweet and the most common Nissan on the planet with a diesel, that is why you got Patrol comments

#2 you need to find out the series of motor...ie SD, UD, ED and so forth.

I have a SD33 in my 83 ex-Garman Patrol. This is a inline 6 diesel motor that was also put in scouts. I have spare 4spd and transfer case that bolts to the SD-series of motors and maybe the ED series....dunno about UD.

Patrol trannies bolt to the SD series of motors, Cabstar tarnnies bolt to the ED and maybe more. Any tranny out of the Nissan truck factory is going to be stronger than any other Nissan tranny made. Aussies are bolting up v8's to Patrol trannies all the time and rarely break them, they are way over built. This means all Patrol trannies up to the late 90's and all Nissan big truck traannies such as Cabstar and Atlas.

What is the exact model of truck you have, ie Cabstar, Atlas?? Did the motor come from a forward cab Nissan utility truck? If so you can likely find very awesome Nissan trannies to bolt up to the motor. Such as the Cabstar 5spd which has a super low 1st and is extremly durable. And yes transfer cases plus PTO's will bolt to these trannies/motors but you have got to know what you are dealing with and what you have.

Brent has the Nissan fast and can give more info and details on what you have and what your options are....

Will the diesel be good off-road? Yes it will rock and is a great long life motor.

Sup AJ? I'd definatly like to take a look at that motor (not to buy, just for fun I'm broke now). I keep toying with the idea of a diesel swap in the future and I'd be cool to get some ideas.

Parts should be available, I know there is a heavy duty truck repair place not too far from Metals Express in Essex that services UD.

Not sure how heavy they are, cant be much more then a similar displacement cummins. Is this going in the CJ? You cant be too concerned with weight with those rockwells anyway . It should work well if you can get it mated to a tcase of some sort. Gobs of torque.

Like rmp&o said, PM Brent XterraGuy/OffroadX he has the nissan parts system on his computer. Not sure if it covers UD though but its a chance.

its a 18-20' box truck
with the flat front cab.
1400 or something rings a bell, i'll get more details at work next week.

Not for the CJ, just thinking for the future.... always have to be building something.

Something like this?

Try and confirm the model and year, it looks like the 94-98 "1400" only came with the 4.2L TD42 and TD42I engines.
The only 3.5L diesel I know of offhand was the FD35 4-cylinder.

www.udxtra.com/catalog.htm should be helpful.

FYI, FAST does not cover the UD truck line...

Brent

Yeah, I'd assume it's the same TD42, and yeah, that's a US truck, see the USDOT number on the door?
The automatic transmission is some sort of Jatco unit.
Manual is the MES50B or MES50C, PTO available. Looking at the diagram at udxtra.com compared to the one for the one in FAST that is behind the TD42 in the Y60/GQ/GR Patrol, they look REALLY similar...

Not sure what axle it is, but AJ said it's HUGE, like Rockwell size. Might, might be an H260, but I'll bet it's an H290. He's supposed to get me a couple of pix.

good stuff there....that diff looks huge. Looks bigger than an H260 but I dunno, only seen an H260 a few times. What is it? LSD availble in it? Ratios? Width? Spline count?

Did you ever figure out what model and year the truck is?

Motor will be fairly low hp, my guess is about 130-150. But torque should be good. Exactly what is the model of motor? Doesn't look like a TD or SD series....

Nissan UD sells these trucks in North America. The Nissan UD truck base is located in Irving Texas and here in Texas they are poping up everywhere.

http://www.udtrucks.com/

Sorry no info on that motor

the current 1400 uses a 4.6 liter motor with 145/175hp - 275/334ft/lbs respetivly.

Yeah, that's gotta be an H290. The H260 third-member is the same size as the H233 (there are some 31-spline H260s, someone blew one and stuck a 31-spline H233 third in to get around on), and that's definitely bigger.

TD42T (intercooled) is still used today on the Patrol, and in that form is rated at 114 kW (153 hp) @ 3600 and 360 Nm (265 ft-lb) @ 2000. Oddly enough, the ZD30T 3.0L 4-cylinder intercooled direct-injection turbo-diesel also used in the current Patrol is rated for 118 kW @ 3000 and 380 Nm @ 2000. Smaller engine, more output, same peaks. TD42T has a 22.7:1 compression ratio, the ZD30T is 17.9:1. Of course, the 4.8L gasoline I-6 that's also available is the bad boy, 248 hp @ 4800, 310 ft-lb @ 3600...
