Patrol ?'s

Hey, I'm a landcruiser guy but have been checking out patrols for awhile on some aussie sites and was impressed with how awesome and how tough they look. Why the heck can't we get the new models here? And were they at one time sold here in america or are the old patrols that I see driving around been imported? How would one go about importing one?

you can import anything later than 1980 models, or 25 years old. I think it is probably pretty $$$ though. I too would like to know the reason they don't sell them in the US. No demand? Govt rules (the reason there is no more LR defender in the US)? either way, it sux.

They used to sell them here, but made a deal in the 60's not to import the Patrol anymore. Toyota was allowed to import the Landcruiser, and Nissan was allowed to have a sports car. If you find an old Patrol, they can be fixedup and made pretty killer. You can find them cheap sometimes, and then some people think they are worth 10's of thousands.

Old Patrols

They have a good motor and are fairly stout. Parts availability is very poor and the low range is LOUSEY, gearing in general is lousey. Low range is like 25:1 . . . High isnt high enough, low isnt low enough.

Yeah, it's 26:1, but on a 3-speed manual that aint horrible. You can back it up with a 37:1

If you can mate a 5-speed to it or get one of Mark's 4WD 5-speeds for it you can see some much better numbers.

One thing I really like about mine is the torquey motor, though. I use it to take hay out to the cows, and I can idle it uphill pulling a 1200 lb bale.

Plus, short of welding up the diffs, you cannot get anything lockerwise unless it's 1979 or newer.

Edit: Like TRed said, Nissan made a deal in the late 60's with Toyota. Even if Nissan sold newer Partols in the US, it wouldn't be anything short of what the Cruiser has become today.
