Project Smokewagon
I am taking an extended cab hardbody and swapping the Z24 for the SD22 diesel and also doing a SAS with an 81 Toyota solid front. Also plan on 33s and a flat bed.
I know the front third member is on the wrong side, but after doing some research, I found out how to do it and tore into it. Here are a few pics of the pickup and engine. I will post my axle progress pics later today. ![]() Tore out the IFS, and got rid of that mess. ![]() ![]() Here is the SD22 diesel I am putting in. Got the engine for free and she runs like a top. ![]() Side view ![]() Top view

The SD22 came out of a 1982 Datsun King Cab 2 wheel drive. I knew the kid that had it and worked on him to sell it for a couple of years. At first he was going to sell the whole pickup to me for 200$. The engine needed a radiator and a starter and the rest of the pickup was junk. I didn't have the money at the time so I told him to hang on to it.
Well about 2 yrs later he called me up and asked me if I still wanted it. Of course I still wanted it. He told me I could have it for free if came and picked it up, he wanted it out of his yard. So I dropped what I was doing at the time and went and picked it up. The engine runs great and the starter terminals just needed cleaned. I found a radiator and made that work for the time being. There is no electrical parts needed to run this engine. Once the engine is running it will run and accelerate all day without no battery attached! |

It shares the bolt pattern of either the L-or Z series motors, so transmissions are not a problem. I believe it's the Z-series motors, so he should be able to use the stock transfer case. The question I have is are you going to turbo the SD? If not it has very little power or torque compared to the gas motors available to swap in. They were mostly designed as an industrial motor to run at constant speeds, not variable, and were short-lived here in the states because of it.

Ya, all I had to do was a bell housing swap for the diesel to mate up to the Nissan's drive train. So I am using the Nissan 5 speed and the Nissan T-case.
I will eventually turbo the SD 22 but for now I just need to finish the project and be able to drive her. I got more pics, but will up load later. |

First off here is the front spring hanger.
![]() The spring hanger tacked up. ![]() Now for the axle pics. Most of the pics I have are of the close to finished product. Not really step by step pictures. Got the axle all tore down to the bare tube and then started taking it apart. Since I had to flip the axle over I had to notch where the 3rd member would now slide in. ![]() Since I was rebuilding the axle I thought I would rebuild the diff-cover. Got the idea from someone on here. Also decided to put my brand on my work. ![]() Since I flipped the axle my axle vent was now on the bottom and the drain plug on the top. I cut both out and swapped them. ![]() ![]() Next I cut and rotated the knuckle balls so that the new angle was around 5-6 degrees and that the pinon angle was around 10 degrees. Also added a gusset on the bottom side. ![]() ![]() I also added a new angle iron gusset on the bottom side. I am not worried about the clearance I lost with that piece of angle iron. As I welded on the axle, I took my time and rotated where I welded to not warp anything. The axle went back together just fine and works like it is supposed to. ![]() The final product minus the spring perches which I put on the next day, but didn't happen to take any pics.

Here is a pic of the axle under the truck for now. I will put on a highsteer kit when I can save up enough money. For now I rigged the steering so that it will work.
![]() Well that is it for now. Will post a few engine pics tomorrow and my engine mounts I made. Last edited by nissandiesel; 03-18-2010 at 10:34 AM. |

This past weekend I mated the engine back to the bell housing and put the whole power train back together and put the engine in the truck.
![]() ![]() The original motor mounts would not work with the diesel so therefore sat the engine about where I wanted it and made two of my own motor mounts. ![]() ![]() I also had to modify the driver's side motor mount on the engine. The angle was off so I just cut and re-angled the original piece. This is what the mounts look like welded in. ![]() ![]() Here is what the project looks like right now. Have to wait a few weeks before I can get a chance to work on it again.

Sorry No progress as of lately. Been to busy with school. Hope to work on her over the summer months and post up some more progress pics.
Next step is to take the bed off and mount my rear axle. Then wiring on the engine and make up some drive-lines. Last but not least a flat bed and some 33'' tires. Hopefully you all will stay interested until then. |

Well it has been a while since I last posted anything. Here is a couple of updated pics.
I have done most of the wiring minus the turn and brakes. Still need to fix up powersteering and a few gauges. ![]()

Yes the Hardbody trans/trasfer case bolts directly to the sd22 bellhousing.
As for the input bearings I swapped the input shaft bearing from the 2 wheel drive donor transmission onto the 4x4 transmission of the hardbody. As for the larger shift rod I took a larger drill bit and enlarged the hole myself. Very easy swap and not complicated. Let me know if you have any more questions. |

Looks like you need some bigger tires there to fill the gap... Haha. Looks great though! You should make a walk around video of it and fire it up.

V6 Hardbody, Ya I would love to have some bigger tires on it for sure. Will need to get lower gears before that happens. I will try to get a video for you but it will be about a month away.

Here is a pretty low quality video from my phone. I will get a better one in a couple of weeks. Should work if you click on the image.

I know Im digging up an old thread, but wanted to say thanks for posting this thread and the fact that the hardbody transmission can be adapted to the sd22. This is great news as I have a 48 Willys with an sd22, and I have it running but havent hooked up the divorced Nissan Tcase yet. BTW, hows the project going?
