Muzzle breaks

Who has em? I'm thinking about breaking my .300 WSM but I've read that the noise level for the shooter increases dramatically. I read that on Chuck Hawke's website so take it with a grain of salt.

Thoughts?

I have one on my .338 WinMag. It's not selectable, so I can't say for certain if the kick would be that terrible w/o it. But, I think if I had to do it again, I'd live with the additional kick. It's not just the noise, but the muzzle blast (particulary when shooting from the bench or a semi-enclosed blind) is tremendous.

A brake is worth its weight in GOLD. If you do a simple search for compensators/brakes you will find better info than redpitbull44's response.

One word replies rock

I'm not worried about other people near me (like range shooting) as I rarely shoot my .300 on the range. I'm more concerned about the blast.

Chuck Hawke finished his piece by saying get a smaller caliber. He seems to find an angle to shit on anything he doesn't like though. He hates Tikka rifles, short mags, and a host of other stuff

I shot a Browning 300 WIN MAG with a factory brake last weekend. Sure, it was loud, but the muzzle blast wasn't bad at all.

As far as more sound goes, get better hearing protection, or double up if it is that big a deal.

My best friend hunts with a 7mm Rem Mag that up until last year had a Boss muzzle break on it. For a very long time we hadn't been successful in our hunts, but over the last 3 or so years he's been getting deer and elk every season. He took a deer last year at around 400 yards and due to a poor ammo choice missed and ended up taking 4 or 5 shots at it. He ears rang for a few days. He's since given up the brake and has a screw cap.

Long story short, they do increase noise level's for the shooter and they should reduce recoil if they are engineered correctly. So, it's a give and take. If you're looking to reduce recoil maybe upgrade the recoil pad?

Box of disposable earplugs is pretty cheap.

I hunt with them in. I don't have to hunt by hearing anything, just sight. I like the brake on my rifle, yes its loud, but worth it.

I have shot about 500 rnds through my Savage Bear Hunter 16 300WSM with the adjustable muzzle brake. Works good, actually decreases recoil by 20-25%. Notice that I am more accurate with the muzzxle brake off for some odd reason. Perhaps when the gasses come out, it moves the barel a little??

Overall, great mod and not terribly loud at the range. Depends on what porting you go with.

Brakes work very well in my experience. I don't hunt without plugs so that isn't a concern.

Get some electronic muffs... You'll hear better with them on and they will still protect your hearing.

I was going to suggest this too (a Walker Game Ear). I am not a fan of ear muffs.

A silencer will reduce recoil to a point.

Electronic plugs/muffs are the BOMB!

I have a CSR brake on my 300wm and its recoil is not between a .308 and 30.06. MUCH nicer. The noise did increase, but it wont make your ears bleed like some info tells you it will.

Yes, very much like a decent brake will.

The reason that brakes work is that they redirect the jet of gasses coming out from behind the bullet. Instead of acting like a small rocket engine and adding to recoil, the gasses get directed to the side where they don't push the rifle backwards. Suppressors trap this jet of gas, and prevent them from pushing. The extra mass helps as well.

One of the benefits of a can you were just told, is more weight (I know, not the only benefit).

I dislike having a heavy barrel with a lot of weight out at the end--at least for a hunting rifle.

Try weight in/on the stock.

I hunt with a T3 lite in 300 WM with a limbsaver, it isnt that bad to shoot until you hit about 15-20 rounds in a sitting. I am launching 180's at about 2950fps.

Supressors are not legal to hunt with in many states anyways.

I have a brake on my .308 AR simply to help with rapid fire. It works awesome for keeping the barrel down and provide very quick follow-up shots. It does increase noise and muzzle blast tremendously to those around and behind you. When its shouldered most of the blast is directed above or next to the shooter so its not horrible unless you are in a confined area. Just get it the barrel threaded so if you decide you do not like the additional noise and blast of a brake you can put a flash hider or thread protector on it.

I stumbled upon some of his babble in cyberland that stated, as fact, that the 7.62x39 is obsolete. Check out any vet with battle scar tissue on that one.

Fuck anyone hating on Tikka
