I have one of the newer redesigned mini 30s and it is a great shooting rifle. And it's stainless which I love. I put about 100k rounds through an old style mini 14. They were reliable but not accurate. But this mini 30 is both.

What's the Mk.II have going for it? I have one and shot it once or twice and know next to nothing about them
See above regarding the mini 30. The Mark I/II is a really accurate, reliable pistol. I have a couple of them and they should be on my list there.

The mini 14's have shit barrels on them from the factory. I have heard rumors that they finally got rid of that pencil barrel. That being said I bought a M1A. The hell with .556. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I love M1As too. I just won't buy one until Someone aside from SA makes one. Look at the ones you can buy in Canada for 1/4 the price that compare well with SA.

I love guns, and I can't see getting down to "a few" myself, but I believe every "gun person" should have some minimal essentials, all of these should be decent quality :

-Bolt action rifle in 30-06, can load any bullet from 110 to 220g well, hunt anything in North America (within reason) make mine a commercial Mauser 98 variant, but a Win 70, Ruger 77, Savage 110, Rem 700, etc.....

-12 Gauge Pump shotgun with 2 barrels, one 28" with choke tubes, and one 18" cylinder bore. Again, hunt anything that flys and some things that dont. I like Mossberg 500's but Rem 870 would work just as well, or Ithaca 37, Win. 12,etc

-22 rifle of some flavor

-J frame light weight carry gun in 38sp

-K or L size 4" barreled 357

-Midsize semi-auto high cap 9 or 40, make mine a Glock 19/23

Not necessarily my favorite guns, I love big bore revolvers, 1911's, lever actions, single shots, double shotguns, semi-auto rifles, varmint rigs and on and on and on, but the list are what I would recommend for a person who is starting to accumulate useful / fun firearms.

No one has mentioned the 30-30. Interesting.

This is pretty much the standard (and not bad) advice about "getting into" guns. I have all of these, with the exception of a 6" .44 Magnum instead of a 4" .357, but I rarely shoot most of them.

Looking back on what you've purchased in the past, what you know now, and the money you've spent, how many would NOT rather have something like a Beretta 1301 Tactical instead of 2-3 pump guns and a mediocre semi-auto?

Again, minimalist doesn't have to equal budget.

It offers inferior ballistics to 7.62x39. We have mentioned 308 which is superior to both of those.

There are quite a few makers of them now. Only Springfield will be able to make the M1A. But there are several very good "M14" type rifle out now.

Check out M14forums.com for a great M14 related site.

For my part of the world, 30-30 does everything we need it to, and whenever there's a political upscuddle, and you all are caught in a category 5 chimp-out for the last box of .223, I never had a problem finding plenty of 30-30.

Typically run around with a Sig938 holstered, a Springfield XDS, and the SBP when running out town. And if I'm in the truck I have a beater AR laying under the seat. The 800 round capacity .308 short barrel full machine gun is my favorite to kill deer or take out on apocalyptic shimp out. Pictured below.

Yeah take them all out with your fast bolt action.

Absolutely only one gun for my lifestyle? It would probably be a shotgun. Not good at being a rifle, but 70 yards is the average range I shoot deer. Also good for squirrel, rabbit, grouse, crows, and most other types of hunting I do.

The next would be a rimfire, probably 22 mag. I never use the one I have because I have a 222, and others. However, it is small enough for small game and does a good job on deer and varmints.

If I had three, it would be a high powered scoped rifle, shotgun, and 22 LR. (drop to the 22 mag).

Adding a fourth would be a 22 pistol (I use 22 pistol more than any other pistol).

Adding a fifth would likely be a 1911.

Forgot that on my list, because I DO have a Taurus 605 for just such purpose. I like a J frame Magnum though, so you can practice with wadcutters, carry .38 +P when NOT expecting trouble, and .357 when you are expecting it.

Minimalist?
.50 Hawken. Ammo is 188 gr galena pills either store bought or roll yer own. Theres a reason why they are called galena pills and living in mining country that's relatively easy to find.
Powder is black, stored in a dry place and it lasts forever with some old trapper cashes found with kegs of powder as good as they were new over 200 yrs ago.

Not necessarily limited to 188 gr RB as buck and ball loads work fine as well.

Did I mention its a rock lock? No primers/caps required.

Overall almost as minimalist as a bow.

My go to guns are:

SCAR 17S w/ Omega suppressor
Larue 556 16" barrel
VEPR 12
Colt railgun 1911

if I could have one one...SCAR17S

Don't think there's much I would need outside of those 4 but those are my go-to guns and most enjoyable to shoot.

Out of what I own.

Glock 34
S&W 626
AR15
Henry .22 lever
Winchester model 70 in 308.

Add in a shotgun I would like to own (haven't found it yet) and I would be pretty set.
