I made a new knife today

this is a for my neigbor. she wanted me to make a knife for her husband after she saw some of my work.So in essence this is a gift for both of them as i am not charging her for the work Its a 440 stainless blade as he is not a real "knife care" guy and wanted to give him something simple to own. its also chizel edged so its esy for him to keep sharp. aluminum bolsters and granite Coreon(sp) scales.
i will post up a couple more once i stop having upload problems

side view

another angle

ridges on back for a nice thumb purchace

yes. i copied the blade style(sorta) from a cheap folder that she liked the rough shape of. The only bitch was getting the stupid thumb hole to come out right i would have rather threaded it for a stud.

I'm not a "real knife" guy, could certainly use one, and would love something easy to sharpen

I'm just saying

belt sander. anything else will make your life suck realy bad you leave a "handle" on the blade blank or weld a rod to the end so you have something good to hold on to when grinding the angles.
The trick to grinding good blade angles is not to think and stay commited. once you start and angle DONT STOP. wait untill the grind is done and then work from there

and then buff

and buff

and buff

and fawking buff some more

buy steel of the variety you want from a metal supply or off ebay (great sorce for small pieces of exotic steels)

take a sharpie and draw the rough 2d shape of the blade on the steel and grind it like 1/16 oversize.

Make another one cause you will fuck up your first one

using a stationary belt sander using no rougher than 120grit paper (use NEW for each side) unless you have a vise to hold your angles then you can start rough and work finer. grind your blade bevels DONT TRY TO SHARPEN IT that is the last step. remember you only want to bevel half the blade thickness so visualy make sure.
90% of what i do is by eye as i am much more acurate than by measure.

flip and do other side.
another option is to use a end mill and a milling machine. much easier

grid the rest of the blade shape and remove the "handle" that you had attached to do the grinding. drill and tap all needed holes

put a ROUGH sharpend edge on it

temper the steel (you look this up for the rockwell required for your use and the type of steel and what shit you have available to temper it)

polish like a motherfucker remebering NOT to over heat the metal and lose your temper. also polish away from an edge so you dont launch a blade into your leg when it catches the buffing wheel ask me how i know
polish polish polish
even if you are putting a satin finish
polish
leave polished or bead blast for a satin finish or for moly coating
TAAADAAAAA

you have a blade

grab an old big ass file and grnd both sides flat and go at it (they make nice blades) solid countertop scraps can be got from ANY countertop install place for free or near free.

Buzz i dont deal with customers when it comes to my artwork very well like this one is a x-mass present and i told her when i started "i havent done a folder in like 6 years, it will piss me off and will probly be done after the 25th" she laughed and said that would be fine

Spawn_X: if you suck at sharpening knives (like i do) then i recomend a nice smith or gatco sharpening system.

but here are some "go by angles"
11* razor blade. sharp as fawk basicly what is called "a wire"

15* wood carving blades or trout knives

19* fillet or boning knives

22* kitchen knives and high end shit. caping knives, pocket knives that dont see abuse

25* basic kinves

29* utility and beaten on knives
