It is a very nice shotgun. I think you should model it for us as well.

Auto 5s (a5) were made in 2 places; Belgium first, then Japan later. The Belgian ones are decidedly better out of the two.

20ga. is more rare than 12, so its worth more $$

some examples:

lightweight model:

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...?Item=40231646

magnum (takes 2&3/4 and 3" shells)

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...?Item=40352390

this one is more like yours, notice the rounded part where you put your hand, vs the other ones. That means that it (and yours) is an older model.

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...?Item=40354120

[edit]
Things that are important/affect price: (not necessarily in this order)
1. Overall conditon of the gun, amount of bluing, rust, etc.
2. Barrel Length
3. Type of Choke (Skeet, Improved Cylinder, Modified, Full)
4. Vent Rib or not (yours isn't)
5. Magnum or not (will it take 3" shells)
[/edit]

I got a wild hair today and decided to look into this further.

I have concluded thatthis gun was manufactured in 1958, and is a Light Twenty.

I even found one that sold recently on Gunbroker for $995.

At least I know if I get hard up for cash I can expect about that for it.

Wouldn't it be awesome if there were some kind of specific forum for gun type questions?

Like the one you are in?!

I started this post 3.5 years ago. I searched for it and didn't even notice it was in Chit Chat so I had my best bud Renee move it over here where it belonged.

My dad has a Belgium 20ga model (w/ vented rib for her pleasure) that will be mine one day when he passes on. Beautiful weapon.

Just a little fyi:

The Auto 5 was the first commercially successful semi-auto shotgun ever made. It was designed by the one and only J. M. Browning in the late 1890's. It was first manufactured by Fabrique Nationale (sp?) and then by Remington as the slightly modified "model 11." AFAIK it was chambered in 12, 16, and 20 gauge. It is a recoil operated gun wherein the barrel moves with the bolt for a short distance before the extraction process begins.

Thought you may be interested.
