Good affordable 22LR

I'm looking at getting a 22 long rifle to take to the range and to just go out and have some fun with. This isn't my first gun but I figured I would use the infinite wisdom of the P4x4 to recommend a good gun. I have about $300 dollars to spend not including optics. I want something cheap but accuracy and quality are also important. I don;t expect it to last a lifetime and will upgrade to a more accurate rifle when I can afford to. Thanksssssss

Can't ever go wrong with a Ruger 10/22.

Remington 597 is cheap but seems to jam up...a lot.

Glad I"m not the only one with that problem, I have been told that a new magazine will help that, but I cant ever seem to get around to getting a new one.

Read the first post - was ready to reply with my opinion - but noticed that everyone shares the same.

I have a stainless and composite 10/22 with a low end bushnell scope - great gun for having a little fun.

if you plan on upgrading the 10/22, i wouldn't spend the extra money for the factory stainless. when you do your upgrades you'll end up replacing everything that was stainless from the factory. i would recomend getting the plain jane cheepo wood stock version and build it from there.

597 are jam prone and the mag does not fix it. Had 2 and had to part ways with both..... 10/22 are good and CZ's are better in my opinion. Remington still makes the speedmaster and marlins are great as well. I would pass on Savages. Their centerfire rifles are great but their .22's leave alot to be desired.

The Marlin 60 might easily be my favorite, but I hate feeding that tube magazine. I don't know if they make them like the used to- with 18 round capacity, but if they are only 10 round I'd look for an old one. I have a 10/22 and it is a great gun as well, but I can shoot more accurately with the 60's I've shot- I think its the sites, and myself, not the guns' accuracies.

IIRC, the stainless 10/22 isn't much more, and if you get the blued one as someone mentioned, the reciever will still be blued. Leastwise, thats what I would think... I think I remember seeing a place to buy 80% receivers but I don't think it'd be worth the work.

They don't make the 18 shots anymore They went to the 13 shots and now 10's but I have seen some still new in the box 13 shots at smaller gun shops and shows..

How many of you have seen the model 60 with the squirrel engraving on it ?

i am pretty sure the receiver is aluminum on the 10/22 regardless if you get a blued or stainless model. if you are going to change out the barrel any ways, why spend the extra for the stainless?

I think my dad's is the squirrel engraved one. Its pretty old, but its the ole reliable rifle that is always within reach enough to take out various wild varmints.

Um, good point. I don't remember noticing the aluminum reciever before.

On another note, a 100 round drum would be fun for plinking.
