I'm going to teach my wife how to shoot my .380(colt pony) this weekend. Is there anything else anyone would like to add to Gil's rant about gun safety?

We've been through some basic safety before with it and showed her how to operate it, unloaded. I just want a good checklist of things to make sure we go through a few times before I take her out to blow up some cans.

She's shot .22's with me before, but has shyed away from anything larger because of the noise and recoil. I don't want her to be around my weapons without at least being able to know how to use them safely if TSHTF.

Gil's got it right. Although I usually add:

Even if you've inspected and/or cleared the weapon, treat it as loaded.

Several years ago, in Michigan, I was down at the Sheriff's office getting a new handgun inspected and thumbprinted. I got into a good conversation with the officer about the Glocks they carried (I came in with a Ruger.) He was more than willing to show me what and how they carried, including how a Glock functioned. Every time he touched the piece, he always performed a clearing and safing drill, which, with a Glock, includes dry firing.

This was all taking place in front of the cashier's windows, where you paid county bills. At the sound of the "snap!", one young man paying off a misdeanor ticket dropped to the floor!

Get rid of any preconceved bullshit about noise and recoil out of her mind. Most autos have little recoil at all. the idea in her head of a recoil will make her push/pull shots as she will flinch in antisipation of a recoil.
If you can get a couple "snap caps" or dummy rounds and randomly load them in the magazine you will see if she is doing this as she will still flinch with no "bang"
Teach her that a firearm should be respected but NOT FEARED !! Give her the weapon before hand and let her fuck with it, play with it, take it apart, dry fire it, fuck with the controls, shoot some snap caps at the TV, shit like that.

Pay attention to bad learned traits !!!
women are usualy easier to teach as they dont have all this BS gangbanga/old western/TV/movies bad training in thier head as kids. they also usualy don't have a fucking ego and actualy admit to not knowing shit about a firearm

Teach repeatable actions. This is what I do every time, and it all happens within fractions of a second but I do it every time without thinking:

bring weapon up to target
focus on the front sight
target and rear sight should be fuzzy
put front sight into correct position with rear sight
rough aim on target
take a breath in
breath out
relax
put target on the front sight
pull trigger
repeat

somebody else will have some input also.

I like to warn the ladies about hot brass landing in exposed places.
Hats and closed at the neck shirts are recomended.

Getting over the recoil/noise issue will be easier said than done, but I don't think she's ever shot a pistol.... maybe my 30-30 once, and its a mite louder than a .380.

I might have have to start her off on a .22 pistol- hmm... single six(Single action) or ruger mark II. She doesn't like the weight of the .380, and IIRC from the 'guns for women' thread, it was one of the lightest ones. She might change her mind if I hand her a bigger pistol(.44 mag, dan wesson) first. Now that is one heavy pistol...
