Search for a new sleeping bag
I found a couple of interest on Pricegrabber.com, who has ordered from them before? Are they a good company?
In the sleeping bag area I'm looking for something for 0º that's pretty light to pack (under 7#'s) and durable as I find myself sleeping in the oddest places some nights! I'm looking to spend under $150, any insight is much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

You could climb into mine...I'll keep you warm
![]() Back on the ranch... I have a Sierra Designs 0deg. The one I have is an older version with 3M LiteLoft insulation. It is lighter for the temp than most other synthetics but isn't as durable. It does however have a lifetime warranty on the insulation and the bag. I had it replaced after a number of years because it lost it's loft. Polarguard is normally considered the most durable syn insulation. However it doesn't compress as well. Get one with a normal nylon liner because the fuzzy ones are more bulky. Whatever you do stick with one of the good names like Sierra Designs, Marmot, Mt Hardware, etc. that have lifetime warranties.

really? cool! I wonder if my REI bag (don' remember if it was a o deg or fifteen deg?) hsa a warrantee? it has done just fine since buyng it back a few years ago.....like in 1977! works fine, but as with all mummy bags is a pain if you move around i sleep. I have a couple hunter style cloth bags(forget name, but fifteen deg) and prefer these unless backpacking! the real question is what are you wanting it for? a zero or even fifteen deg bag is too warm for summer in many areas... do you really need the fancy ultra-lightweight bag when you are truck camping? don' think so..they are really only for backpacking when comfort isn't an option..just my opinion... 7# is super heavy for a "packable" sleeping bag. If you can handle 7#, buy a cheapo $40 Wenzel flannel bag from K-Mart.
If you really want packable, you can "afford" 4-4.5 lbs for 0º with your budget. I have a 10 year-old $125 5ºF Slumberjack (Quallofil) that is packed out and a 40ºF bag now...about 4# ...a 4 year-old $300 0ºF REI (down/dryloft) bag that is awesome!!!!...about 3# ...a 5 year-old $90 (outlet sale) 30ºF TNF polarguard bag that I like pretty well....about 3.5# I use the down REI bag 9 months of the year, and the polarguard TNF bag in the warmer summer months. Pay more for down, take good care of it, and you'll never regret the purchase. The only reason I even have the TNF polarguard bag is for kayaking--down just doesn't like water. A good pad (thermarest or similar) will make your bag feel 10º warmer.

We just bought the wife a N Face Cat's Meow. Women specific bag IIRC. Retail was around $160, but I think it's a 20 degree bag. I dunno, but she loves it.

If you're going to be sleeping in 0* weather get a bag that is rated colder than that, like -20 or colder. If you get too warm you can unzip the bag but there's not much you can do if you aren't warm enough. I take my North Face "Dark Star" (-40 rating) hunting even though the coldest I have seen during the Sept. moose season has been 0*. If there is any possibility that you could get the bag wet don't even consider a down bag, a good synthetic bag will retain a high percentage of its thermal efficiency when soaking wet.

Some people are so insensitive!! ![]() In all honesty, I probably only camp out 8-10 nights per year, but not only in the summer time. I get out whenever I get enough kitchen passes to redeem, and sometimes that's in the middle of winter!! I use the down bag on single nights camping in the coldest nine months..not for nine months continuously.....so, the down bag gets used 6 nights/year, the Polarguard one 3-4. Never, never, never store your sleeping bag in its stuff sack--that's partly why my old Quallofil bag is so crappy and packed out today. Hanging them from the ceiling (most bags have a hook near the foot) is best, in a loose bag or large pillowcase is second best. Last edited by MT4Runner; 04-27-2006 at 01:52 PM. |

I've got a Nebo Avalanche -0*. great little cold weather bag, but sucks in the summer. Lifetime warranty, mine's about 5 years old and I got it used from a hunting buddy. Found them online for around $60, but it is 8#. I wouldn't recommend it for anything but truck camping.

I'm happy with my North Face bag. Picked it up on sale a few years ago at a pretty good price, under $80 if I remember. It's a slightly oversize bag, I'm not a heavy guy so its perfect being able to move around a bit. http://www.thenorthface.com/opencms/...=NA&model=APF9

I'm trying to find the brand, but there's a company out there that makes excellent ultralight backpacking bags, with names like Kestral and Osprey and other bird names. Lemme look.
