I've taken a two deer with the SKS.
Nice round, not too ballistic (compared to modern rifle with ballistic tip ammo), but got the job done.

The buck was shot through both shoulders above the heart. He went abotu 30 yards before crashing. The doe was shot running away (slightly more than quartering), the shot entered about the last rib and lodged in the base of the neck. She dropped instantly. I was shooting Winchester pointed soft point ammo. In my opinion, it is better than a 30-30.

Your sister and brother in law are very close to the Lewis Wetzel Public Hunting Area. A large tract of land w/excellent deer and turkey hunting. I go there a lot myself. Have taken some nice gobblers. I grew up in the Pine Grove/Reader area. Tell them howdy from a fellow Shortliner. They will know what a Shortliner is.

Doesn't get much better than that. Dallison Timber Co. donated mora land a while back. (rumor) I need to get some updated maps. Have you ever hunted it? Very large tract of land. I got turned around in the fog one morning on a ridge and it took me awhile to find the road. Came out about 1/2 mi. from the truck.

I used to hunt Tyler Co. quite a bit. Mostly in the Wick area and some on Klondike Ridge/The Jug. Lottsa turkey on Klondike but it gets hunted pretty hard. Shot a 22 1/4lb. bird out there in '04 spring gobbler season. He had hens w/him and wouldn't budge so I started calling and slowly working away from him. He couldn't stand it and broke away. Sounded like an elephant coming at me. Biggest bird I've ever taken.
