Dual Fuel?

Is the extra price worth it to be able to burn unleaded over propane or other sources.Got alot of trips planned already for this year so I'm looking into some better camping gear.

If you are ever going to be in a situation where a single source of fuel might be an issue, like in a foriegn country, then most definately.

Having something that runs on white fuel, kerosene, and diesel is kinda cool. But the later do introduce a lot of maintenance.

I like multi fuel stoves just for the reason of a "backup"
Ya its nice to run white gas all the time but I can find diesel or kero just about anywhere in any god forsaken country/place

MSR x2

Look in the camping thread for some online stores/sources

This thing is awsome, but pricey
white gas, petrol, diesel, kerosene, avgas, moonshine, etc

I'll cast a vote for the Brunton http://www.brunton.com/product.php?id=60

I'll also cast another vote against coleman. Even though Peak is their "high-end" line and are good stoves, stay away from the ones only labeled coleman.

See, this borders on explosives.. I mean peak propane bottles and... no no.. I'm not going to say it

I caught a national forest on fire once with white gas anyway, I can't say squat

FWIW a whisperlite international will burn anything and can be had for around $70. Why buy cheap?

What else can you buy dual fuel other than stoves and lanterns?

I'll get 'flamed' for this for sure, but

I've had a coleman dual fuel lantern for roughly a decade and similar stove for about 5 years. If nothing else I like it because unleaded pump gas is way cheaper than white gas. Plus I only have to carry one kind of gas can for quads, etc. No heavy ass propane bottles. No extra can of special white gas. Whatever.

I don't know what these guys are talking about with their problems with coleman. They've always done right by me. I still have a stove and lantern that came from my parents and are just about as old as me and they still work fine. They just burn the white gas only is all.

I used a Coleman 440 multi-fuel for almost 10 years, never gave me a single problem. However, the newer stoves are lighter, use a wider range of fuels and are easy to repair in the field. Not to mention that with a different range of fuels you can select a fuel that has a higher "BTU" to shorten your boiling time on water. I have no beef with Coleman/Peak1 but MSR and some of the other brands make some really nice stuff. Their technology is first rate...

IMO unless you're traveling to foreign countries or are in locations where fuels are scarce, the multi-fuel stoves are more expense and trouble than they're worth. Burning diesel or other types of fuel will be undesirable in most situations due to the maintenance involved as well as the lower amount of heat they put out. What kind of stove are you looking for anyway? Everyone is posting backpacking and lightweight stoves which may not even be what you're looking for. I personally have an MSR Pocket Rocket stove and love it.. doesn't take time to "prime" or heat up or anything.. just turn the knob and it heats... FAST.

"Worst case" would be finding some sticks and wood and cooking over an open fire!

I had a Coleman stove with a hose that melted off causing a pillar of flames 10 feet high. It's funny now, but at the time it was scary!

I have a multi fuel coleman, works fine. It holds enough fuel in the tank for two or three days, which is usually plenty. I've used both unleaded gas and white gas in it, both work fine(but the unleaded is a bit stinky).
