california...m4/ar build
hey, when i was in the gun shop getting my sp101, i overheard a very well educated/versed counter person telling another customer about lowers.
basically what he said was that one could "buy a lower assembly" and "build the gun themselves" now, as i understand it, the cali law is a features based ban on assault weapons, (i.e. pisol grip stock, detachable mag., forgrip, supressor/flash hider/bayonet lug, etc.) where you can combine two features and no more so would this "homebuilt AR" look like an AR? or would it look like the m1a? can anyone in cali clarify? is there a permit one can get for an AR? could i just build an AR that has a pistol grip stock and a detachable 10rd mag..and thats it as far as "features"? (for example) |

Thats why there are those no mag well AR receivers. You have to break open the action and load via the top. Or use one of the pistolgrip-less lowers with a mag well. I know that the cali law went further then to outlaw features, they actually outlawed manufacturers. So the "loophole" I read about over at ar15 was people using a receiver manufactured by someone not on the list. I would suggest doing some searching at ar15 and see if you can find the links to the specific laws.

little to add here.
you buy a "lower" which is deemed to be "the gun" requires a DROS. all the rest of the parts can be bought anywhere. mind you, you still have to have no less than a 16" barrel.... (not exact on min. barrel length) I know you can't make a pistol-length legal gun out of the lower. you also can't have push-button detachable mags. you can modify the pin to make it removeable with a screw driver, etc. --Sherpa

Go to www.calguns.net. They've got a lot of info on "off-list" builds.

You need to but a lower receiver that is not called out on the AW ban list. Then you can build it either 2 ways. Use a magazine lock, which requires a tool to remove, or don't have a pistol grip (use a Monster man grip, SBR, etc. non-pistol grip grip), then you can use detachable magazines, but can't have telescoping stocks, forward grip, flash hider, grenade launcher (because we all know about all the deadly drive by grenadines that go on, but it's for the children).
Link for FAQ on AR/AK builds in Kalifornia http://calguns.net/a_california_arak.htm P.S. Read the FAQ and do a search, or you will get jumped on (kind of like here )

I'm about to start my first AR build. Just have to wait for the lower to come in at the local gun shop and I can start on it. I am only mildly mechanically inclined but it looks pretty damn easy to do with all the info on AR15.com to help out.
Good luck building in CA
