Hey Doc! When my wife asks, I'm blaming you...
...for inadvertently reminding me that I wanted to build something evil and black.
Yeah, I know, it's a grownup Lego set (took me maybe two hours in between phone calls and real work) that's no challenge to put together at all, but I had to start somewhere.

Bushmaster stripped lower, RRA complete-rifle kit (everything but the stripped lower) except the grip, which is an Ergo.
The BM lower was what I could get locally; figured sticking with a biggish name there would probably mean that if I decide to resell it later on down the road, it'll probably retain the most value (and by the time you pay FFL transfer, shipping, price, etc., a bargain lower isn't really much cheaper anyway). I have yet to actually fire it, and being the dimwit I am, didn't realize that a flattop upper, doesn't come with any default rear sight. So accuracy might be a little off as yet, since it only has a front sight, and I don't own anything optic-ish at all. Doh!

She won't be mad now, when you start bringing home more lowers to build, then she'll probably get a wee bit pissed.
EDIT: and I'd suggest getting a rear iron of some sort first before going to optics. Knowing how to use irons is a good thing. Last edited by TheRedHorseman; 02-05-2007 at 09:38 PM. |

Yeah, I figure building my own little evil black army probably wouldn't go over so well.
![]() I've already ordered a detachable carry handle with built-in basic rear sight; I actually have no current plans for a scope for this one. Just a KISS rifle to start with, and see where things go from here. |

I used to run a carry handle and ended up with a GG&G flip up A2 rear on my rifle, it's more compact, lighter, leaves room for optics if I want them, and was made here in Tucson to boot.
Can't go wrong with irons either way though. |

I have 2 and seem to be wanting more. The first is a 24" chrome bull barrell full floating flat top upper in 5.56/.223 on an Olympic Lower, and the second is a 16" 9mm Upper on a Stag Arms Lower, with the Sten Mag Adapter.
I almost picked up a 7.62x39 upper a month ago, and they are also available in .308, .45ACP, and .50 Beo. SKS and AKs would be cheaper, but, oh well. I like what I have.

Finally got out for some range time; not much "blaming" to do, as she likes it.
Official reason for hitting the range was for a pistol class--let others in the class plink a bit with the AR, and had a couple of comments of "I shouldn't have done that, now I want one". ![]() Also took along the Mosin-Nagant... that old wood beast with the metal buttplate, will kick the crap out of you. Passed it around a bit to the rest of the class as well--I think we collectively got out about 20 rounds out of it, and all concurred that it wasn't near as much fun as the AR (which saw a couple hundred rounds). My wife likes the AR over all the other rifles due to the lack of recoil.

Quote:
The range didn't have any standing rifle windows, and wouldn't let me shoot it at the pistol targets ("thin berm" they said, although there were two progressive berms, and the farther-out one was well beyond substantial) so the only available rifle position was seated anyway. ![]() Nonetheless, a good way to blow a few hours and a few hundred rounds. And more importantly, let the wife get accustomed to the AR--the last thing I want is her all pissed-off about the "evil black rifle you built and I hate".

I have the bug for one too but SIG is sloooooowwww in getting theirs out. Probably better though since I don't/shouldn't have the money for it.
